Thursdays at Byrum HallThe Provost and the Office of Undergraduate Admissions invite faculty and staff to Thursdays at the Porter B. Byrum Welcome and Admissions Center on Oct. 24.

A wine and cheese reception will run from 4-4:30 p.m., followed by a program from 4:30-5:15 p.m. that will feature Neil DeVotta and Phoebe Zerwick.

DeVotta, an associate professor of politics and international affairs, will analyze the rise in countries that are neither fully democratic nor fully authoritarian and the strategies adopted by political elites that ensure such soft-authoritarianism.

Zerwick, a lecturer in English, will screen and discuss portions of “The Story of My Life,” a multimedia documentary that tells the stories of six intellectually and developmentally disabled adults in photography, visual art and spoken and written word.

A wine and cheese reception will run from 4-4:30 p.m., followed by a program from 4:30-5:15 p.m. that will feature Jac Heckelman, Herman Eure and Donna Henderson.

Heckelman, a professor of economics, will discuss estimating delegate votes and interests at the Constitutional Convention of 1787.

Eure, a professor of biology, will discuss what is referred to as The Diversity Impact Factor: 398 Years of Observations and Assessments at Wake Forest. Eure will compare Wake Forest’s diversity issues from his arrival on campus in 1973 to those in 2013, while asking, “How does the diversity commitment today differ from the commitment 39 years ago and what can we expect in the future?”

Henderson, a professor of counseling, will discuss adapting processes to an online program delivery and how it has opened dynamic possibilities for the counseling faculty.

Thursdays at Byrum HallThe Provost and the Office of Undergraduate Admissions invite faculty and staff to Thursdays at the Porter B. Byrum Welcome and Admissions Center on March 7.

A wine and cheese reception will run from 4-4:30 p.m., followed by a program from 4:30-5:15 p.m. that will feature Laura Aull, Michaelle Browers and Alessandra Von Burg.

Aull, an assistant professor of English, will discuss her current book project, “Genre-based Rhetorical and Linguistic Approaches to University Writing,” which proposes a combined social and language-level framework for analyzing academic discourse. Aull will especially discuss this proposed framework in light of patterns of overstatement and understatement in early university writing.

Browers, an associate professor of politics & international affairs, will discuss her use of the “Reacting to the Past” pedagogy and how role playing and historical simulation can provide a means of exploring classic texts in the history of ideas.

Von Burg, an assistant professor and director of undergraduate studies in communication and interim director of American ethnic studies, will discuss the “Where Are You From?” Project, a series of video interviews about migration and mobility with citizens, residents, and immigrants who are part of Wake Forest and the surrounding community.

Thursdays at Byrum HallThe Provost and the Office of Undergraduate Admissions invite faculty and staff to Thursdays at the Porter B. Byrum Welcome and Admissions Center on Feb. 14. This month’s event is titled “Fall in Love with the Arts” and will serve as the kickoff for the annual Campaign for the Arts.

A wine and cheese reception will run from 4-4:30 p.m., followed by a program from 4:30-5:15 p.m. that will feature J.K. Curry, Jacqueline Carrasco and a performance by Authoring Action.

Curry, associate professor and chair of theatre and dance, will discuss the collaboration between Wake Forest and Festival Stage on the production of 33 Variations playing at the HanesBrands Theatre.

Carrasco, associate professor of music, will discuss how the Triad is coming alive with the sounds of “new music” and perform excerpts from a solo violin piece highlighting new trends in contemporary musical styles.

Authoring Action, the Arts Council’s newest funded partner, works to transform the lives of youth through the power of creative writing, spoken word arts and leadership education. Members will perform a piece entitled “Reach for the Stars.”

Thursdays at Byrum HallThe Provost and the Office of Undergraduate Admissions invite faculty and staff to Thursdays at the Porter B. Byrum Welcome and Admissions Center on Nov. 1.

A wine and cheese reception will run from 4-4:30 p.m., followed by a program from 4:30-5:15 p.m. that will feature Jennifer Burg, Michael Sloan and Sean Hannah.

Burg, professor of computer science, will share curriculum material developed for interdisciplinary courses in digital sound and music, linking concepts, applications, and science at various levels of abstraction.

Sloan, assistant professor of classical languages, will discuss his new book, The Harmonious Organ of Sedulius Scottus, surveying the influence of the proto-humanist Sedulius in the Carolingian age and beyond through his reception and transmission of classical thought and texts.

Hannah, a professor of management, the J. Tylee Wilson Chair of Business Ethics, Schools of Business, and Colonel, U.S. Army-Retired, will discuss character and ethics in the business profession and on-going and future efforts in the Schools of Business to develop leaders of character who have the capacity to get results with integrity.
