For Wake Forest Communications and External Relations (CER), commencement planning begins early. All of CER — events, creative, digital, news and photography — begin laying the groundwork for graduation months in advance.
This year, University events, in addition to handling the distribution of 13,788 commencement tickets and managing a production schedule around campus renovation work, the team was responsible for overseeing a new commencement experience for graduates and their guests. Geni Greiner, who joined Wake Forest in February 2015, managed Commencement with her new team for the first time this year.
The Staff Advisory Council (SAC) is pleased to announce the results of the 2015 spring election. Thirteen new SAC representatives from across the University staff have been elected. New council members are: Landon Burrow (FACS: Maintenance Team 4), James Coffey (FACS: Custodial Services), Lou Gusbar (School of Business- Student Academic Services), Lauren Largen (Graylyn: Ads & Promotions), Sherry Long (Athletics: Student Athletes Services), Ellie Shannon (Athletics: Administration), Shelley Sizemore (Campus Life), Darlene Starnes (Multicultural Affairs), Barbara Stephens-Macri (Human Resources), Amanda Tingle (Dean of Wake Forest College), Amalia Wagner (Office of the Provost), Sandra Whicker (Admissions: Undergraduate), and Sarah Wojcik-Gross (Information Systems).
In addition to newly elected representatives, Artanzia Yates (Information Systems) and Scott Spernoga (Athletics: Sports Medicine) have been re-elected to serve an additional term. Each SAC representative will serve a term of three years and may be re-elected to serve one additional term.
Their presentation, “Commencement Speaker Drama? Getting It Right in the National Spotlight,” shared best practices from the media frenzy that descended upon Wake Forest’s 2014 commencement ceremony when speaker Jill Abramson was abruptly fired as Executive Editor of the New York Times.
As they reflected upon the five-day span between her firing and her commencement speech, Neal and Walker credited offices and partners across campus – including University Events, Parking and Transportation, Facilities and Campus Services, Information Systems, Aramark and University Police – with their team’s ability to accommodate a ten-fold increase in media attendance and capitalize on the national spotlight shining upon Wake Forest.
Kevin Cox (MA ’81), director of crisis communications and community relations in University Advancement, and Patty Lanier, administrative coordinator for the Department of Communication, were named Employees of the Year at the Staff Rewards & Recognition Luncheon on Nov. 4.
Cox, who has held a number of leadership roles in the Office of Communications and External Relations, joined Wake Forest as a staff member in 1990. He was recognized for his calm and careful communication style, particularly in difficult situations; his ability to build strong and trusting relationships; his dedication to mentoring staff of all experience levels; and his commitment to preserving and improving the Wake Forest community. Cox currently represents Wake Forest and University Advancement on many committees and councils, including the Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce Tech Council, Staff Advisory Council and University Area Neighborhood Association.
Lanier has been at Wake Forest since 1998 and was called the “heartbeat” of her department. She was recognized for taking a proactive, solutions-oriented approach to helping students, faculty and staff in the department; exercising consistently good judgment in routine activities and challenging circumstances; anticipating and planning for upcoming needs; and maintaining a smile and sense of tranquility, while keeping others on deadline.
