Notice of tree removals and replacements along Reynolda Road
Two sections of trees will be removed and replaced along Reynolda Road to meet the needs of Reynolda Gardens and Reynolda Village.
Work has begun on the portion of Reynolda Road that extends from the end of the formal gardens to the Reynolda Gardens equipment garage, to accommodate a hedge and new trees that will create a strong living fence line, enhancing security for the Reynolda Gardens facilities. Six Eastern Red Cedar trees and two Cryptomeria trees will be removed and replaced in the process, along with various shrubbery.
A second group of trees along the Reynolda Village parking lot that sits just west of the Reynolda Road entrance to campus will be removed in November. The group includes 21 Eastern Hemlocks that are in decline due to Hemlock Wooly Adelgid, a tree-killing pest. Two Leyland Cypress trees and one Green Giant arborvitae that are obstructing lighting will also be removed. The area is currently overrun with invasive English Ivy, which will be removed as well.
A new border planting that consists of nine appropriately sized trees and over 50 ornamental shrubs will replace the trees and invasive English Ivy that will be removed.
The WFU Campus Tree Advisory Committee evaluates all discretionary tree removals and provides recommendations for the care of our campus trees in adherence with the WFU Campus Tree Care Plan. The plan includes policies for working with construction & planning teams to avoid impacts to trees, repurposing wood from trees that need to be removed, provision of approved species lists for new tree plantings on campus, and more.
The committee maintains a 1:1 replanting ratio, ensuring that for each tree that is removed, at least one is planted in its place. In the aggregate, over the past decade, nearly 1,200 new and replacement trees have been planted on campus.
