A message from University Police
This message was e-mailed to students, faculty and staff on Sept. 17 by Communications and External Relations on behalf of the University Police Department:
On September 10 and 11, twelve University faculty and staff members received multiple variations of an email from an unknown source. The emails were intentionally inflammatory, using racist, homophobic, anti-Semitic and discriminatory language. The wording of the emails was intentionally intimidating and threatening, though no direct and specific threat was made. At this time, we have had no reports of any students receiving similar emails, and no further emails have been reported since the original twelve.
University Police informed all faculty and staff of their investigation on September 11. University Police coordinated with Information Systems and local authorities. They also enlisted the help of state and federal agencies.
The emails were sent to individual and office inboxes associated with the Department of Sociology, the Department of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the LGBTQ+ Center, and the Intercultural Center.
In response to faculty and staff concerns, Wake Forest has increased the police and security presence around the buildings housing impacted offices. After consulting with state and federal authorities, Wake Forest did not cancel classes or issue an alert to students requiring any change to daily activity.
This investigation is still very active, and we thank you for your patience as authorities continue to pursue answers and follow leads. We will share updates as they become available.

President's Ball to be held Sept. 20 at the Coliseum
The 2019 President’s Ball will be held Sept. 20 from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Coliseum.
Students, faculty, staff and alumni are invited to the ball. Registration is available on this website.
Organizers have recommended that attendees come ready “to enjoy an evening of live music, free food and a special appearance by President and Mrs. Hatch.”

Crime Alert: Shot fired at University-owned house
This crime alert was emailed to students, faculty and staff on Sept. 16 and distributed in additional ways:
The Winston-Salem and Wake Forest University police departments are investigating an incident tonight (Sept. 16) in which a bullet was fired into a University-owned house on Polo Road. None of the house’s occupants, all graduate students, were injured.
Police believe the shot was fired at approximately 7:15 p.m. It was nearly an hour later before the residents of the house realized what had happened and contacted police.
While the police continue their investigation, University staff members are offering support and assistance to the students who live in the house.

Campus events Sept. 18 to recognize Campus Fire Safety Month
In recognition of Campus Fire Safety Month, Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal Mike Causey is partnering with Wake Forest this month to raise awareness of campus fire safety.
Sept. 18 is Campus Safe NC Day for North Carolina colleges and universities. The Wake Forest event is one of several similar efforts by the State of North Carolina on campuses to inform college students how to avoid injury due to fire.
An event at 10 a.m. on Sept. 18 will involve Winston-Salem firefighters setting fire to a mock dorm room outside Scales Fine Arts Center. It will take place in the traffic circle outside Scales on a flatbed trailer especially set up for the demonstration. The demonstration is intended to demonstrate how sprinkler systems in University and college residence halls can save lives.
The event is open to students, faculty, staff and others.
The Wake Forest event is one of several similar efforts by the State of North Carolina on campuses to inform college students how to avoid injury due to fire.
Several speakers will be present at the Wake Forest event. They include: Commissioner and Fire Marshall Causey,Vice President for Campus Life Penny Rue, Winston-Salem Fire Chief Trey Mayo, Dr. Anju Bakhshi Saraswat of the Wake Forest Baptist Burn Center, T.J. McLamb of the Fayetteville Fire Department, and Chief State Fire Marshal Brian Taylor.
Wake Forest departments that offer safety programs for students, faculty and staff will host Campus Safe Day activities in Benson University Center, Room 401 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. featuring door prizes, food and safety information.

Secrest Artists Series presents Take 6 on Sept. 19

The Secrest Artists Series opens the 2019-2020 season with a Sept. 19 concert by Take 6. The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Brendle Recital Hall.
Heralded by Quincy Jones as the “baddest vocal cats on the planet,” Take 6 is the quintessential a cappella group and model for vocal genius. Six virtuosic voices united in crystal-clear harmony, against a backdrop of syncopated rhythms, innovative arrangements, and funky grooves that bubble into an intoxicating brew of gospel, jazz, R&B, and pop. With praise from such luminaries as Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Brian Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald and Whitney Houston, the multi-platinum selling sextet has toured across the globe, collaborated across genres, and is recognized as the preeminent a cappella group in the world.
Join the pre-concert talk at 6:40 p.m. led by Ann Phelps, director of programming for leadership and character at Wake Forest.

Tickets for the community are $5-$24. Free with WFU ID. Wake Forest University and School of Medicine faculty, staff and retirees receive free admission for themselves and one guest to each Secrest Artists Series performance. Wake Forest students and School of Medicine students receive free admission for themselves.
