An update on demonstrations and interim policy information

Early this morning, the University provided notice to a small number of students remaining on Manchester Plaza that the demonstration was in violation of agreed-upon terms and violated University policy by failing to comply with the directions of University officials. These students were notified that they would be subject to interim suspension should they fail to follow instructions to immediately disperse. The students cooperated and Manchester Plaza is now clear.

The University’s early morning action was taken to minimize the risk to students, both those directly involved and bystanders, and to avoid further disruption to the academic mission, final exams and planned campus activities.

For these same reasons, the University is instituting an interim policy that designates the time, place and manner of acceptable demonstrations for the remainder of the academic year to only the following:

Place: Designated area of Poteat Field
Time: 8 a.m.–8 p.m.
Manner: No sound or amplification devices. No chalking anywhere on campus. No tents or other structures. All other university policies remain applicable.

This interim policy is effective immediately through May 21, 2024.

The University remains committed to upholding Wake Forest’s institutional values and acting to maintain safety and preserve the academic mission.

This remains a difficult moment for Wake Forest and university campuses across the country. The University will continue to create opportunities to heal divisions and bring our community together.

Announcement about Baity Street redevelopment

In August 2023, Wake Forest announced it was exploring the redevelopment of University-owned property adjacent to Allegacy Stadium, Couch Ballpark and the Joel Coliseum. Working with the City of Winston-Salem, Carter and Front Street Capital, this redevelopment effort aims to reinforce Winston-Salem’s position as a tourism, sports and entertainment destination by creating a lively mixed-use development with plans for new retail, restaurant, experiential and/or residential spaces.

Carter and Front Street Capital have worked on many projects throughout the country, including the redevelopment of Summerhill (former home to Atlanta Braves) in Atlanta, Georgia, and Bailey South in Winston-Salem. The Carter and Front Street Capital team have held multiple listening sessions with students, staff, and the wider Winston-Salem community since last fall to help inform the project’s direction.

Near-Term Central Space Planning: new website & open house event

The Near-Term Central Campus Space Planning project is the first time Wake Forest’s space – on the Reynolda Campus and within our adjacent properties – has been examined in a comprehensive way. The University is planning to reimagine how the currently available space can serve administrative needs, and thus create space within the academic core of campus to support our academic mission. Read more at the project website.

In addition, faculty, staff and students are invited to play a pivotal role in shaping the near-term future of our shared and collaborative campus learning and gathering spaces. Various conceptual designs for common spaces, outdoor areas and more will be on display at an open house on Wednesday, May 1, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in Benson 401, and community feedback is invited about these evolving spaces.
