Space heater safety: Requirements and reminders for winter
As we approach the winter months, here are a few reminders about space heater requirements on campus.
- Use approved space heaters. Space heaters must be certified by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL), such as UL or ETL, and equipped with a tip-over safety feature that automatically shuts off the unit if it falls over.
- Avoid extension cords and power strips. Space heaters must be plugged directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power strip.
- Keep heaters away from combustible materials. Keep space heaters away from paper and other materials that could catch fire if they come too close to or contact the heater.
- Turn heaters off when unattended. Turn off space heaters at the end of the day and whenever you leave your office, even for a minute.
Note: Space heaters are not allowed in Wake Forest residential communities. Please see the Guide to Community Living for additional details.
