University Police and Environmental Health and Safety have reported an aggressive, hissing raccoon on campus, specifically around the area of Manchester Hall under the Four Chairmen’s Bridge. The raccoon was attracted to bowls of food that have been left in that area for feral cats. Students, faculty, and staff are advised to be cautious when in that area and do not approach any animals present.

As you may recall from a community safety alert issued January 4, there were reports of raccoons on and near campus. Some of the raccoons captured tested positive for rabies. Animals acting in a way that is contrary to the norm is an indication of rabies. These changes may include aggression, but sometimes, a rabid raccoon may also appear to be more friendly and easy to tame.

A local pest control company will be on campus to set traps for raccoons. If you see traps, please do not touch them or move them.
We are asking all members of our community not to provide bowls of food or shelter for feral cats anywhere on our campus. Feral cats can present a problem to human health, native species and to property. While well-intentioned, the feeding and sheltering of feral cats can create new issues, such as attracting aggressive raccoons.

Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), in partnership with Facilities and Campus Services and other campus departments, is investigating best practices in feral-cat management to address the population on the Reynolda Campus.
Members of the Wake Forest community are asked to report any wild animal that appears to be aggressive or sick to University Police by calling 336-758-5591.
