The following announcement was e-mailed to faculty and staff on Dec. 19 by Wake Forest Communications and External Relations:

We are saddened to announce that Gerald W. Esch, professor emeritus of biology, died Dec. 18.

Information about a service for Dr. Esch is not available at this time.  When a service is announced, information will be provided on the Inside WFU web site.

Dr. Esch joined Wake Forest’s biology faculty in 1965. He retired in 2017.

At Wake Forest, he held a number of academic and administrative positions, including Charles M. Allen Professor of Biology, dean of the Graduate School and chair of the Department of Biology.

We grieve Dr. Esch’s death and extend our condolences to his family and friends, as well as those at Wake Forest who had the opportunity to know him.
