Faculty Open Lab on multimedia set June 8; Staff may attend

This is a guest post from the University’s Instructional Technology Group:

A Faculty Open Lab opportunity for multimedia development inspired by campus needs and requests from faculty will be held on Wednesday, June 8, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Staff with an instructional multimedia need are also welcome to attend. The walk-in lab is hands on and held in individual recording rooms.

This open lab will provide faculty with hands-on personalized instruction in the development of multimedia for student learning. Staff will have microphones, cameras and some specialized software on hand. Projects are ideal for Flipped Classroom or Homework Help.

Faculty will share their instructional needs and our lab facilitators will assist in technology selection as well as organization of materials. Learning objects developed during this open lab can be loaded into Sakai, Google Drive, YouTube or other area of your choice for student retrieval.

Please bring your Wake Forest-issued laptop and any existing instructional materials. This open lab is walk-in between the hours of 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. We will be located in Z. Smith Reynolds Library’s suite of study rooms directly across from the circulation desk. Registration is optional but will assist us in obtaining an accurate head count. A message from Kris Shelton, instructional designer, Center for Leadership and Character at the Wake Forest School of Business

banner.snowday.400x225Snow days are coming! Last winter, Wake Forest University had 10 days where classes were either delayed or cancelled due to snow and ice. To help faculty and staff across the University be prepared to use technology to run a virtual class during a snow day, the Center for Leadership & Character is co-sponsoring with the Collaborative Technologies Team and the Instructional Technologies Group the “Build an Extra Class Day! Web Tools Workshop Series.”

The “Choose Your Snow Day Adventure” workshop, the first in the Web Tools Workshop Series, will be held on Thursday, Oct. 30 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Farrell Hall, Room 108.

ZSR offers Kindle Fire HDs

imagesFor the past two years, the ZSR Library has offered two class packs of tablets, each consisting of five Apple iPads. These iPads have already been successfully used for a variety of projects, often outside of the classroom. The library just added a third class pack of 20 Kindle Fire HDs.

These Kindles use “whispercast” so instructors can manage multiple devices and distribute content.

Faculty can check out any of these packs for up to an entire semester. The new Kindle Fire HD pack has already been booked for spring 2014, but if you have a summer or fall class that could use these 20 Kindles or one of the iPad class packs, contact Barry Davis.

Jing Wei, an employee at Wake Forest, was snorkeling with her husband and several friends Dec. 23 in a lagoon in Aruba when she drowned in an accident that is still a mystery to her husband.

Wei, 48, received a master’s degree in chemical engineering at N.C. A&T. She worked as a technician at the School of Medicine before she landed a job as an instructional technology consultant on the Reynolda campus.

“We are all devastated,” said Simone Caron, the chairman of the history department. Wei maintained that department’s website. “Our department will never be the same without her.”
