Thrive Dimension Champions for 2018-19 announced

The Office of Wellbeing, recently, presented its Thrive Dimension Champions Awards to faculty and staff.

Annually, the Office of Wellbeing recognizes award winners who demonstrate their commitment to individual and community wellbeing across the eight dimensions of wellbeing:  emotional, environmental, financial, intellectual, occupational, physical, social and spiritual.

Recipients and their dimensions for which they were recognized are the following:

Emotional: Jessica Scales, case manager, CARE Team

Environmental: Jim Coffey, director, Landscaping and Residential Services

Financial: Deborah Snyder, administrative coordinator, Teaching and Learning Collaborative

Intellectual: Adrian Greene, associate dean, Undergraduate Admissions

Occupational: Jonathan McElderry, assistant dean and director, Diversity & Inclusion

Physical: Christy Buchanan, professor of psychology

Social: Derri Stormer, major, University Police Department

Spiritual: Gail Bretan, program director for Jewish Life

Triad City Beat honors Gail Bretan, Justin Catanoso

Two members of the Wake Forest University community, Gail Bretan and Justin Catanoso, were among a group of 15 Triad residents recognized this week as 2016’s Citizens of the Triad.

Annually, Triad City Beat, a news organization in the area, recognizes people in the Winston-Salem/Greensboro/High Point area who “make culture and commerce, build relationships and play, and generally create a singular thread in this region we call the Triad.”

Bretan is recognized as director of Jewish Life at Wake Forest and as an active participant in several interfaith groups in Winston-Salem. She is a staff member in the Office of the Chaplain. Catanoso is recognized as a faculty member and director of the journalism program at Wake Forest, while maintaining an active career as a journalist (including often-traveling foreign correspondent).  Just recently, he travelled for the UN Climate Summits in Paris and Lima.

Director of Jewish Life named

Bretan.300x175Gail Bretan has joined the Office of the Chaplain as the University’s Director of Jewish Life.  She began Jan. 6.

Bretan will provide pastoral leadership to Jewish students, staff and faculty including opportunities for worship, prayer, mentoring and counseling.  She will also be a resource for the student group Hillel and offer non-Jewish student opportunities to learn about the Jewish faith.

Bretan also serves as the volunteer coordinator for Jewish Family Services in Greensboro. She has a Ph.D. in educational studies with a concentration in cultural foundations from UNC Greensboro, a master’s degree in counseling from the University of Arizona and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Northwood University.

Students, faculty and staff are invited to a Welcome Reception in the Hillel lounge in Collins Residence Hall this afternoon, Jan. 17, from 4 – 5:30 p.m.
