The Campus Kitchen receives award from USDA

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, recently, presented a silver Turnip the Beet Award for 2018 to The Campus Kitchen at Wake Forest.

The award recognizes Campus Kitchen for its 2018 summer food service program.  Wake Forest was one of 66 recipients of the silver award.  The Turnip the Beet Award “recognizes outstanding summer meal program sponsors across the nation who work hard to offer high quality meals to children” during the summer.

The USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service launched the awards in 2016.  Bronze, silver and gold medals are presented.

A USDA grant funds Campus Kitchen’s summer meal program, which extends free meals to children who receive free and reduced-price school lunch during the academic year.  Meals provided by Campus Kitchen include fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Primarily, the Campus Kitchen meals benefit children attending Freedom School, a program for elementary and middle-school students aimed at strengthening children’s reading skills and closing achievement gaps.  Wake Forest’s education department is hosting the Freedom School held at the University.

Previously, Campus Kitchen won a bronze Turnip the Beet Award for its 2017 summer meal program serving Freedom School.
