88.5 WFDD has received 11 awards for excellence in radio journalism from The Radio Television Digital News Association of the Carolinas.

WFDD reporter LeShea Agnew took a total of five awards. She received first and second place awards for feature stories for “Kenny” and “Elkin,” respectively. She also received a first place award for consumer/economic issues for her report “Answer the Call” and a first place award in the health and medicine category for “Young Chefs.”  Her piece on same-sex domestic violence received a second place award for investigative reporting.

WFDD reporter/host and sports commentator Jeff Tiberii received first and second place awards for his sports commentaries “Athletes & Mental Illness” and “Hype: When the Media Attacks,” respectively. He also received a first place award in spot news for his piece “Piedmont Twister” and a first place award in sports reporting for his coverage of the Winston-Salem Dash minor league baseball team’s new downtown ballpark.

Additionally, WFDD’s three-part story on community gardens, “Sharing the Bounty,” won first place for radio series.

Finally, WFDD’s website, wfdd.org, also received an award for the online portion of WFDD’s series “Currents: Life Along the Yadkin River.”

“Our news team is dedicated to bringing relevant and substantive stories about the people, issues and institutions in our area to our audience,” said WFDD general manager Denise Franklin. “This is recognition of that dedication and our mission to enrich, inform, inspire and entertain listeners in the Piedmont.”
