Wake Forest is making a significant investment in the future of the Spirit of the Old Gold and Black marching band. The new initiative is designed to strengthen the band program, expand its membership, and enhance the student experience.

Beginning this Fall 2026, the University will implement a new scholarship program for the marching band. Up to 50 merit-based scholarships of as much as $5,000 per year will be awarded annually to eligible continuing band members. The program recognizes the dedication required to participate in the band and provides meaningful financial support for students who contribute to its success.

Additional elements of the initiative focus on building a stronger sense of community and improving day-to-day logistics for band members. Starting in the 2027–28 academic year, a designated housing block will allow band students to live in close proximity, making early rehearsals and performance schedules more manageable while fostering a more connected experience. The University is also exploring ways to enhance academic support for band participants, in partnership with the Dean of the College and the Office of Academic Advising.

Recruitment is another key component of the plan. A new admissions overnight program will launch during the 2026–27 men’s basketball season, inviting admitted high school students with band experience to campus. Participants will have the opportunity to rehearse and perform alongside current members, offering a firsthand look at the program and helping build the next generation of the band.

The initiative aims to grow the marching band to approximately 100 members over the next three to five years. A larger band will bring increased leadership opportunities for students and a greater presence at University events.

“We are incredibly grateful for the University’s support of our marching band. This initiative represents a significant investment in the student experience, recognizing the hard work and discipline required to continue the legacy of the Spirit of the Old Gold and Black,” said Director of Bands Tim Heath. “The University’s generosity leaves us with a deep sense of gratitude and a renewed commitment to excellence. Go Deacs!”
