Nate Plageman appointed next Faculty Athletics Representative

President Susan R. Wente has named Nate Plageman, associate professor of history and coordinator of the African studies minor, as the University’s next Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR). Plageman began serving as the FAR designee on July 1, 2025, working alongside Pete Brubaker, current FAR and chair of health and exercise science, during Brubaker’s final year in the role.
The Faculty Athletics Representative is appointed by the University president. The position ensures the academic integrity of the athletics program, promotes the welfare of student-athletes, strengthens communication between athletics and faculty, and represents Wake Forest at meetings of the NCAA and ACC, which mandate the position.
“Dr. Brubaker has been a trusted voice and tireless advocate for our student-athletes, and I am deeply grateful for his years of service and mentorship during this transition,” said President Wente. “Dr. Plageman is well prepared to assume this important role, bringing valuable experience and a commitment to academic and athletic excellence.”
Plageman has a strong record of service in faculty governance and athletics engagement. Since 2021, he has served on the College Faculty Athletics Committee, chairing the group from 2023–2025. During his time as chair, he also served as a faculty representative to the Board of Trustees’ Athletics Committee.
“I’m honored to serve as Faculty Athletics Representative, to represent Wake Forest, and to work to ensure the ongoing academic and athletic success of our student-athletes,” said Plageman. “I look forward to continuing the meaningful work of collaborating closely with athletics to ensure that Wake Forest continues to prioritize student-athlete well-being.”
Plageman’s official term as Faculty Athletics Representative will run from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2029.
