Information Security has recently received reports of suspicious emails in circulation offering “complimentary” pickup of old technology. We ask that you never accept requests like these from unauthorized third parties. Improper disposal of technology devices like printers, cameras, computers, and tablets can lead to data security risks such as identity theft and financial fraud. These devices often store sensitive information that is not entirely removed by deleting files or reformatting the hard drive. Additionally, electronic waste (e-waste) contains hazardous materials that can harm the environment.

To protect sensitive information and minimize e-waste, all university technology equipment should be disposed of through the Facilities E-Waste Recycling Program. Students, faculty, and staff can use e-waste disposal bins located across campus or arrange a free pickup through Wake Forest Facilities Management e-waste disposal. Wake Forest computers should be sent back to Information Systems for proper disposal. Never use a third-party service for tech disposal.

For more information about data security and e-waste disposal, visit is.wfu.edu/infosec or contact the Information Systems Security Team at infosec@wfu.edu.
