The Winston-Salem Department of Transportation will begin installing a pedestrian crosswalk at the intersection of Long Drive and University Parkway next week. Work is scheduled to begin on Monday, Feb. 12, and is expected to take approximately two weeks to complete.

The pedestrian crosswalk is the culmination of ongoing work with state and local officials to improve safety in this area.

“Both students and university leaders at Wake Forest have tirelessly advocated for the installation of a crosswalk at this critical intersection. By joining forces and working collaboratively with administrators and our elected officials, we will increase the safety of Wake Forest students who cross this road each day,” said Student Body President Jackson Buttler.

The new crosswalk will include:

  • Pedestrian signals for crossing University Parkway
  • Pedestrian crossing warning signs to alert drivers
  • High-performance, high-visibility crosswalk markings
  • A crossing island with ADA-compliant ramps for those with disabilities

In addition to the crosswalk installation, timing adjustments will be made to the traffic signal at the intersection to allow ample time for pedestrians to cross safely.

The safety and wellbeing of the Wake Forest community is the University’s top priority. The City and the Wake Forest Department of Transportation and Parking appreciate your cooperation and patience as the crosswalk is installed.

Shuttle service to the Long Drive residential area will be available from 7 a.m. until the last trip departing at 9:30 p.m. during the crosswalk installation and will continue once the crosswalk is completed.

On-Call Demand Shuttle is available daily, from 7 p.m. until midnight, during the academic year. More information is available on the Transportation and Parking Services website.

Those who know they will be returning to campus after midnight may consider using rideshare services to avoid crossing University Parkway on foot. Students who do not feel safe traveling back to campus should contact University Police at 336-758-5911 or through the Wake Safe mobile app.
