Wake Forest will pilot recently revised large event management plans for student organization events held at the University Activity Space later this month.

The University Activity Space, a facility formerly referred to as “The Barn” at the eastern end of Carroll Weathers Drive, has been unavailable for use since 2018 when an altercation at an event between visitors to campus led to the shooting death of one of those visitors, Najee Baker, outside the Palmer and Piccolo buildings. The pandemic has since changed how events are managed and prolonged the reopening process as the University reimagines protocols for all student event spaces.

“The revised plans are being implemented on an interim basis, as this is the first step in a thoughtful review process, both for this venue and for campus-wide event management practices,” said Associate Dean for Student Engagement Tim Wilkinson.

Wikinson emphasized that student input will be a critical component to further refining event planning and management efforts. Inclusion and intentionality are key facets of this process.

COVID-19 protocols will continue to influence the nature of student-organized activities, including those planned for the University Activity Space.
