A Wake Forest alumna, Jackson-Newsom double-majored in psychology and religion. She earned a master’s and PhD in human development and family studies from the Pennsylvania State University.

“Julia brings extensive strategic planning experience and has proven her exceptional skills in analyzing data, setting metrics and leading important initiatives,” said Wake Forest President Susan R. Wente. “She will be a valued partner as Wake Forest moves forward.”

Early in her career, she conducted research on substance use prevention and taught as an adjunct professor at Wake Forest in the psychology and communication departments. Jackson-Newsom is the author or co-author of several peer-reviewed journal articles related to substance use prevention.

During her 14 years at UNCG, she served in administrative roles supporting work at the dean, vice chancellor and chancellor level. She served as director of research for the School of Education and special assistant to the vice chancellor for research and economic development before working in the chancellor’s office. She assisted Chancellor Franklin D. Gilliam Jr. during his transition to UNCG. She chaired the University’s strategic planning committee and provided leadership in a range of areas, most recently serving as the co-leader of UNCG’s response to COVID-19.

Jackson-Newsom received the 2021 Gladys Strawn Bullard Award for outstanding leadership and service to the University in recognition of her work during the pandemic.

“I would not be where I am or who I am today if it weren’t for Wake Forest,” Jackson-Newsom said. “The relationships and experiences afforded to me during my time as a student have served me so well. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with President Wente, who truly inspires me, and to support this great institution and the next generations of Demon Deacons.”

She will begin at Wake Forest on Sept. 13.
