The following message was sent on behalf of Interim Provost Mark Welker and School of Medicine Dean Edward Abraham:

Dear WFU and WFBMC Faculty, Staff and Students,

As you know, Dr. Lorna Moore will retire from her position as Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences on June 30, 2012.

Currently, the Dean of the Graduate School reports to both the Dean of the Wake Forest School of Medicine and the Wake Forest University Provost. An ad hoc committee was asked to assess the current reporting structure and prepare a document outlining the pros and cons of this structure and alternatives to it as used at other universities. The committee has completed its report.  The incoming Provost, Dr. Rogan Kersh, will work with the Dean of the Medical School this fall to determine a permanent administrative structure for the Graduate School.

Until that time, two interim deans have been appointed.  We are pleased to announce Dr. Brad Jones has accepted an appointment as Interim Dean of Graduate Programs in Arts and Sciences and Dr. Dwayne Godwin has accepted an appointment as Interim Dean of Graduate Programs in Biomedical Sciences.

These appointments will begin July 1, 2012, and will continue through the 2012/2013 academic year.  In these positions, each interim dean will be responsible for graduate school budget, graduate policies, programs and students, and the graduate school office staff on their respective campuses. Wake Forest will continue to have one Graduate School and the interim deans will co-chair the Graduate Council and graduate faculty meetings.

Members of the ad hoc committee from the Reynolda campus were: Brad Jones, (Associate Dean of the Graduate School), David John (computer science), Leah McCoy (education), and Brian Tague (biology).

Members of the committee from the Bowman Gray campus were: Dwayne Godwin (Associate Dean of the Graduate School), Jan Wagner, (Vice President/Sr. Associate Dean for Research), Debra Diz (Hypertension and Vascular Research Center), and Doug Lyles (biochemistry).

We thank them for the work that they have invested in this topic over this academic year.

Please join us in congratulating and thanking Brad and Dwayne upon these appointments.

Sincerely,

Mark E. Welker                        Edward Abraham
Interim Provost                        Dean, Wake Forest School of Medicine
