Thomas O. PhillipsWake Forest University has named Thomas O. Phillips director of Wake Forest scholars, a new position at the university. Phillips will oversee post-graduate scholarships and fellowships for Wake Forest undergraduate students.

Previously, Phillips was director of merit-based scholarships for the university where he assisted in the selection of Reynolds, Carswell and Gordon undergraduate scholarships. He will continue to assist in this selection process, as well as work with scholarship students who may be candidates for post-graduate scholarships and fellowships like the Rhodes, Marshall, Fulbright and others.

“Through years of experience working with our most capable students, Tom Phillips is the right person to inaugurate this important program,” said Samuel T. Gladding, associate provost. “He has a great affinity for our students.”

Phillips is a 1974 graduate of Wake Forest and a former Carswell Scholar. He has worked in various offices at the university since 1974, including admissions and financial aid and has taught several classes in the English department and in other areas. He holds a Master of Arts in English from Wake Forest and a doctorate in Victorian literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
