Wake wonders: Inside the Graylyn estate
Take a closer look at the Graylyn estate with five things to know about this Wake Forest historical site.
Located just down the road from Wake Forest University, Graylyn offers a setting that feels a bit like stepping into a European fairytale—without ever leaving Winston-Salem. More than a hotel or conference center, Graylyn is a piece of the city’s history, full of character and charm.
Graylyn was built in the late 1920s as the home of Nathalie and Bowman Gray—one of Winston-Salem’s most influential figures and the first non-family CEO of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Following Bowman Gray’s passing in 1935, the estate went on to support what is now the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Gifted to the institution in 1946, Graylyn has remained closely connected to Wake Forest ever since—even serving as student housing for a time in the 1970s. Today, the estate is owned and operated by the University, with proceeds supporting preservation efforts, student scholarships, and study abroad programs.

Here are five interesting facts you may not know (but should!) about Graylyn.
#1 – Architecture worth exploring

The Manor House shows off exquisite Norman Revival-style architecture outside, and inside you’ll find equally exceptional features. Carrie DuPre, Marketing Manager, shared “The Graylyn estate is a living gallery showcasing global craftsmanship, blending gems dating back to the 17th century with handcrafted elements from the 1920s and 1930s. Our estate’s unique character is highlighted by its original ironwork, which adorns the Manor House, the balcony of the Atlantis Room, and the grand stair tower. In the Persian Card Room, you will find Syrian walls that date back to the 17th and 18th centuries, hand-selected by the Gray family on a trip to Istanbul in 1928. Our Library features walls imported directly from Paris in the 1920s and an ornate wood-burning fireplace.”
#2 – Discount room rates for Wake Forest employees

The estate has 85 guest rooms that provide a mix of modern and vintage options. For those who want to enjoy the estate’s historic side, you will love that the guest rooms are original to the home. Guests even have the ability to stay in what were once Bowman Gray’s personal quarters. Wake Forest staff and faculty can enjoy the discounted guest room rate of $159. This rate is non-transferable to friends and family, and blackout dates do apply.
Beyond its charm, Graylyn stands out for its unique amenities, including personalized butler service, a 24/7 ice cream room, and complimentary Mrs. Gray’s butterscotch cookies each afternoon. Beyond the enchanting rooms, the estate boasts 55 acres of gorgeous green space. Whether enjoying a walk, playing yard games, or simply reading a book on the back patio of the Manor House, these grounds truly help you escape into nature.
#3 – Dine at a discount without booking a room

Did you know you can enjoy lunch or dinner at Graylyn without being a guest? The gorgeous dining room in the Manor House is open to the public. Diners can make reservations on OpenTable or by calling Graylyn at 336-758-2425. Advance reservations are requested. Lunch reservations are available between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and dinner reservations are available from 5:30 – 8 p.m.
Wake Forest University staff and faculty receive a 20% discount on their meal, excluding alcohol and groups of more than eight.
#4 – Memorable team building options

In addition to its meeting spaces and catering, Graylyn offers “Graylyn Adventures”—a collection of 25 flexible, group-friendly team-building experiences. Designed to recharge participants while strengthening communication and creativity, these activities go beyond the typical team agenda.
“We invite all WFU staff, faculty, groups, and departments to reach out and ask about our meeting spaces, special events, and team-building activities at graylynmeetings.com. We would love to help plan an inspired event,” shared DuPre.
#5 – Unique butler tours

Unlike many hotels, Graylyn has a team of butlers who assist guests during their stay. Some have been with the estate for years, decades even. They know the ins and outs of the Graylyn estate and almost every aspect of its history.
For $60 per person, visitors can enjoy hearing all about this ‘insider information’ on one of the estate’s monthly Tour Pour Du Jour. These butler tours include a curated tour, wine, and light appetizers. Upcoming dates are March 22, April 26, and May 10. Each tour runs from 4 to 6 p.m. Advance ticket purchase is requested.
Our State magazine recently featured Graylyn, highlighting its tradition of hospitality and the role of its butlers in creating personalized guest experiences while preserving the estate’s history. Read the article in Our State.
