The university recently learned that Professor Emeritus of History James Pierce Barefield passed on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2025. James served the University for over 40 years, retiring in 2004. 

James’s passion for his students and enhancing the quality of education at Wake Forest was represented in his dedication to advancing honors, overseas programs, and merit scholarships at the University. He was known for building deep, enduring relationships with students, staying connected and offering guidance long after students left his classroom. In 2017, for his services to Wake Forest, James was awarded the Medallion of Merit, the highest University honor.

The Wake Forest community extends its condolences to James’s family and friends. Per James’s wishes there will be no formal memorial service. Family and friends are encourage to conduct a toast in his honor on Sunday, November 14, at 5 p.m. An obituary can be found here.
