Demolition of the former Winston-Salem First Church building – located at the intersection of University Parkway, Polo Road, and Long Drive – will begin next week and is anticipated to continue through August 22. Demolition should not impact campus activities or traffic. A perimeter fence will occupy about 100 parking spaces; no parking disruption is anticipated, as the lot has lower utilization during the summer.

The University elected to demolish this building because of its poor condition and ongoing unoccupied status, which creates safety concerns. The adjacent school building will not be included in the demolition. Given the building’s former status as a place of worship, special care will be taken to be respectful in the process and preparation for demolition.

Following the demolition, the cleared land will offer 150 additional parking spaces for overflow parking as needed. The future use of this property and the adjacent school building will be carefully considered as part of the Bicentennial Comprehensive Campus Space Plan
