The Grounds, a transformative 100-acre mixed-use development near Deacon Boulevard, is entering an exciting new phase of infrastructure enhancements centered on environmental restoration, connectivity, and pedestrian-friendly design. These foundational improvements not only support the future of the development but also offer lasting benefits to the surrounding area and broader community.

A significant part of this work is the large-scale restoration of Upper Silas Creek. This environmental initiative is reshaping degraded stream banks, expanding green space, and revitalizing the natural landscape, creating a healthier ecosystem within The Grounds.

Efforts to enhance walkability and connectivity are also well underway. A one-mile trail loop, seamlessly connected to greenways and sidewalks, will invite residents and visitors to explore the area on foot. Wider sidewalks, bike-friendly paths, and safer pedestrian crossings—especially across University Parkway—will improve accessibility and reduce vehicular traffic between Wake Forest’s Reynolda Campus and The Grounds.

Deacon Boulevard is being reimagined as a more pedestrian-friendly corridor, with expanded sidewalks, enhanced lighting, improved road quality, and flexible options to support pedestrian-only events. The design prioritizes walkability while maintaining event traffic flow, encouraging vibrant street activity and improving accessibility throughout the area.

As part of this project, Deacon Boulevard will be closed between University Parkway and Piccolo Drive starting March 26 and continuing through August. During this time, visitors can access Wake Forest baseball, tennis, and football facilities—as well as other businesses in the area—via Reynolds Boulevard, Shorefair Drive, and 27th Street. Access to the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum and fairgrounds will remain available from University Parkway and 27th Street. Detour signage will be posted throughout the area during the closure.
