BikeA guest post from Wake Forest University Police

Each year, dozens of bicycles are abandoned at locations around campus. They are collected by the police department and held for the period allowed by NC law until they can be donated. The University Police Department donates these bikes to the Twin City Bike Collective.

The Twin City Bike Collective got its start as a service-learning project during the 2017-18 school year at Summit School. Five Summit 9th-grade students and a faculty member, Chris Culp, created the first repair team.

The Collective created a workspace, and students began repairing bicycles after school and on Saturday mornings. Repaired bikes were donated to Salem Bike Ministry, a local service organization headed by Phillip Summers. Mr. Summers had been donating bikes in his neighborhood in Southeast Winston-Salem to people of all ages who could not afford to purchase a bike on their own.

The Twin City Bike Collective has repaired and donated more than 1,000 bicycles since the project began.

University Police will be removing abandoned bicycles from campus over the next several weeks. For more information or if you have questions, email Officer Ron Davis at davisri@wfu.edu.
