Department of Education’s proposed new Title IX regulations

Posted on behalf of Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Jacqueline A. Travisano, Vice President for Campus Life Shea Kidd Brown, Interim Chief Human Resources Officer Lianne Sullivan-Crowley, and Title IX Coordinator Aishah Casseus

With the safety and wellbeing of our students, faculty, and staff at the forefront, Wake Forest is carefully reviewing the final Title IX regulations concerning campus sexual harassment and sexual assault published by the Department of Education on April 19, 2024. The regulations are effective August 1, 2024. A summary of this most recent update can be found here.

Wake Forest’s commitment to preventing, responding to, and providing a fair process regarding sexual harassment and sexual assault is unwavering, and the new federal regulations present an opportunity to renew our firm commitment to campus safety.

We have created a task force, including representatives from the Office of Institutional Equity/Title IX Office, Division of Campus Life, Office of the Provost, Human Resources, and the General Counsel’s office. The task force is working through the required and possible changes to the University’s policy and procedures. The new regulations give some discretion to institutions regarding certain aspects of their policies, and the task force will create an opportunity for the campus community to provide input in those areas.

The University’s current Title IX and Non-Title IX Sexual Misconduct Policy and Grievance Procedures remain in place, and we will communicate on Inside WFU and through other channels when the policy and procedures are updated.
