The Slavery, Race and Memory Project will host a special screening of “The Prayers of Both Could Not Be Answered” on Monday, Oct. 23  at 5:30 p.m. in Kulynych Auditorium at the Porter Byrum Welcome Center. 

 The film, by Danny Drysdale, explores Abraham Lincoln’s use of religious language and imagery in his second inaugural address regarding slavery, civil war and American purpose.

Following the screening, Associate Professor of Religion & Culture and Director of Wake Forest’s Center for Research, Engagement and Collaboration in African American Life Derek Hicks will moderate a panel discussion on the film’s social relevance, artistic merit, and the issues it raises. 

Panelists include:

  • Danny Drysdale, Film Director & Producer of “The Prayers of Both Could Not Be Answered”
  • Bill Leonard, Founding Dean & Professor Emeritus Wake Forest School of Divinity
  • Tony Parent, Professor of History & American Ethics, and
  • Sarah Soleim, Manager of Community and Academic Learning Wake Forest Historical Museum
