Wake Forest CLASS to host series on Autism and the College Experience

The Center for Learning, Access, and Student Success (CLASS) is excited to welcome Assistant Clinical Professor Jane Thierfeld Brown from Yale University and Director of Disability & Access Services Lorre Wolf from Boston University to host a series of community and campus conversations about autism and the college experience from March 21-23.

Jane and Lorre are part of the College Autism Spectrum, an independent organization of professionals whose work and research focus on the needs of college students with autism.

Faculty and staff are invited to attend as many sessions as possible. Specific information about each session, including registration, can be found on the Autism and the College Experience website. Lasting between 60-90 minutes, session titles include:

  • Advising Autistic Students
  • Navigating the Talents and Expectations of Autistic Students
  • Teaching Autistic Students
  • Informal Q&A with Panel of Autistic Students
  • Autistic Students in Medical and Health Sciences

Feedback from a survey distributed last year to all WFU faculty about CLASS services indicated that the WFU community is particularly interested in learning more about autism and college students. These conversations aim to help faculty and staff learn and develop a better understanding about how to support autistic college students while also developing strategies to address equity and access to learning environments.

CLASS is committed to its mission of providing opportunities for all students to achieve academic success, and these campus conversations allow us to highlight this commitment. Jane and Lorre will help us meet this goal by sharing practical strategies for inclusive teaching and best practices for academic success for all students, including those enrolled in programs at WFU School of Medicine.

In addition to events for the Wake Forest community, a public event will be held March 21 for community members interested in learning more about how to support autistic college (and college-bound) students. Faculty and staff are welcome to invite family and friends to attend, participants may register on the event website.

CLASS appreciates the support from our co-sponsors: School of Medicine, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, School of Law, School of Business, Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Office of the Provost, Office of the Dean of the College, Residence Life & Housing, Division of Campus Life, Center for the Advancement of Teaching, Department of Athletics, Office of Personal and Career Development
