Wake Forest faculty to perform in Wait Chapel

Christopher Gilliam, Wake Forest’s Choir Director, will conduct a performance of composer-in-residence Dan Locklair’s major work, “Requiem,” in Wait Chapel with the Winston-Salem Symphony and Chorus. Locklair’s Requiem was written in memory of his parents.

Music professors Bryon Grohman and Elizabeth Pacheco Rose will also perform as vocal soloists.

The performance will be held Sunday, Oct. 30, at 3 p.m.

“Any piece that I do is personal,” said Locklair. “But, due to its commemoration of my beloved parents, my requiem is even more so. Although I utilized texts from the traditional Requiem Mass, I also make use of scriptural texts that offer comfort. My ‘Requiem’ is in English—this, to me, allows for more clarity of meaning.”

Gilliam said the ‘Requiem’ is perhaps the best modern expression of these revered texts set in recent years, and it is a piece that is quickly becoming a staple in the choral/orchestral repertoire. “It is my distinct privilege to have the opportunity to perform this work, not only as the conductor of a regional Symphony Chorus, but as Dan’s friend and colleague at Wake Forest.”
