CBHA Data Security Incident

Dear Colleagues,

In the coming days, you may receive a letter from Carolina Behavioral Health Alliance (CBHA) about a data security incident that may affect you and members of your family.

CBHA, the University’s third-party administrator for behavioral health benefits, informed the University of the incident and has been conducting a formal investigation to determine the scope of the incident and identify who may have been impacted. CBHA notified law enforcement and is working with a forensics firm. To date, they have found no evidence that anyone’s information has been misused.

We have learned that the incident impacted CBHA data files belonging to their health plan clients. This includes information about health plan members, including members of the Wake Forest health plan, who are or previously were eligible to receive benefits through CBHA, even if they never accessed those benefits.

We take any situation that could compromise the data of our faculty, staff and family members very seriously. The University has been working closely with CBHA to understand what happened, what has been done to address the incident, and the steps CBHA is taking to strengthen its network security measures.

Those affected by the incident will receive a notification letter in the mail from CBHA. The letters are being mailed today. If you receive a letter from CBHA, we encourage you to take advantage of the identity theft protection and credit monitoring services CBHA is offering. If you have questions not addressed in the letter, please call CBHA’s dedicated, toll-free call center at 1-877-514-7764, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. EDT, excluding holidays. Because we are providing this information to employees in advance of when notification letters will be received, the call center will be available for questions beginning at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, July 5, 2022.

We understand that continuity of behavioral health care is essential for the wellbeing of colleagues and their families. Those accessing behavioral health benefits are encouraged to continue to do so. CBHA has assured us that additional safeguards protecting personal information have been put in place since the incident occurred.

Human Resources continues to evaluate behavioral health administrators for the 2023 plan year, with minimal provider disruption as a top priority. Updates will be shared with campus as they become available.

We regret any concerns this may create for you and your family.

Sincerely,

Hof Milam
Executive Vice President
