We are saddened to share that Patricia Johansson, former associate dean and longtime English department faculty member, passed away on April 7. She was 90.

Johansson earned her master’s degree in English from Wake Forest University in 1969 and joined the Department of English as a faculty member shortly after. She remained a member of the faculty until her retirement in 1998. During her long, illustrative career at Wake Forest, she was an early recipient of the Reid-Doyle Prize for Excellence in Teaching (1973-74) and led groups of students studying abroad at Casa Artom in Venice. In addition to her teaching and scholarship, she served in the administration as Associate Dean in the Office of the Dean of the College. During her time at Wake Forest, she mentored thousands of students, including several who returned to Wake Forest for their careers, and her powerful influence set the course for many.

A service is planned for Monday, May 2, at 11 a.m. at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church in Winston Salem. Johansson’s obituary can be found here.
