Sexual assault reported on campus

This alert was emailed to students, faculty and staff on Jan. 31 by Wake Forest Communications and External Relations:

Wake Forest is issuing this alert concerning a reported incident that may be of concern to the campus community.

A student reported to University officials on the afternoon of Jan. 31 that they were sexually assaulted on Jan. 16 at a Wake Forest residence hall. The student reported that the assault was committed by a student known to them.

University officials are investigating the incident.

Wake Forest’s Student Sexual Misconduct Policy is available online here.  Details on effective consent are included on page 8 of the online policy.

The University’s definition of Sexual Assault mandates that each participant obtains and gives effective consent in each instance and before each sexual act. For the purposes of this policy, the University defines effective consent as follows:

• Consent is informed, freely and actively given through mutually understandable words or actions that indicate a willingness to participate in the sexual activity.

• Consent cannot be gained by ignoring or acting in spite of the objections of another.
• Consent can be withdrawn at any time and for any reason.
• If there is any ambiguity or confusion, the initiator of the sexual activity should stop.and clarify the other’s willingness to continue and capacity to consent.

Wake Forest is providing resources to assist the individual involved in this incident, and will continue to take actions to maintain the safety and security of the campus community.

It is important for all of us to focus on the things that we can all do to keep ourselves and others safe.

• Ask a friend who may be in a potentially dangerous situation if they want to leave and then make sure that they get home safely.
