Li named first Wells Fargo Faculty Scholar
Dr. King Chuen Peter Li, incoming chair of radiology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, has been named the first Wells Fargo Faculty Scholar. This is the inaugural award in a program to accelerate innovative research conducted at the Medical Center and at Wake Forest University.
Li, who will begin his tenure as head of radiology on July 3, is a renowned researcher, educator, inventor and clinical leader in molecular imaging and radiology. He currently is the M.D. Anderson Foundation Distinguished Chair of the Department of Radiology at Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas. Additionally, he is professor of radiology at Weill Cornell Medical College, an adjunct professor of bioengineering at Rice University and adjunct professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Houston.
During his distinguished academic career, Li was a tenured associate professor at Stanford University School of Medicine and was selected as Teacher of the Year at Stanford. Additionally, he was a tenured senior investigator and former chief of the Radiology and Imaging Sciences Program at the National Institutes of Health.

Submit nominations for Wells Fargo Faculty Scholars Program
The Wells Fargo Foundation has established a faculty endowment for the Wells Fargo Faculty Scholars Program with an initial gift of $500,000 and plans to increase this endowment by $500,000 per year for four additional years. The Wells Fargo Faculty Scholars Program is intended to assist the university in recruiting new faculty whose research demonstrates potential for development of intellectual property and/or other business concepts to further economic renewal in the Piedmont Triad area.
The newly recruited faculty member will be designated as a Wells Fargo Faculty Scholar in perpetuity and will receive the endowment distribution as part of their recruitment package for a period of three years. The endowment distribution can be used for recruitment, salary, and benefits customarily made available to faculty members at Wake Forest University or Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center (as the case may be), laboratory, equipment, research, and travel costs.
Department chairs or deans are asked to submit nominations for this program to tperry@wakehealth.edu and wagnera@wfu.edu by 5 p.m. on Jan. 31, 2012. Nominations should include the candidate’s C.V. and a nomination letter from the chair or dean which addresses the academic credentials and promise of the candidate as well as their potential for development of intellectual property and/or other business concepts to further economic renewal in the Piedmont Triad area.
Nominations will be submitted to a selection advisory committee which will be co-chaired by members of the Wake Forest University and Wake Forest University School of Medicine faculty. The co-chairs of this first selection advisory committee will be Dr. Bruce King (Chemistry) and Dr. Frank Torti (Cancer Biology).
By February 29, 2012, this committee will rank order the top three candidates and will provide this information to the Wake Forest University Provost and the Dean of the Wake Forest School of Medicine. By May 1, 2012, the successful candidate needs to have signed a letter of commitment to a faculty appointment at Wake Forest University or Wake Forest School of Medicine and their employment needs to commence no later than September 1, 2012.
Candidate Selection Criteria: Strength of academic credentials and promise as well as potential for development of intellectual property and/or other business concepts to further economic renewal in the Piedmont Triad area.
