Tests of WFU emergency alert systems to be held April 27 and 28

A message from Communications and External Relations

Tests of Wake Forest emergency alert systems will be conducted April 27 and 28. System tests will occur between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. The tests are being conducted to ensure that the University’s emergency notification systems are operating properly.

If an actual emergency were to occur on the testing dates, the University would use numerous alert methods to inform the campus.

Here is what to expect:

Wake Alert Testing – Students, faculty and staff will receive test messages starting at 9 a.m. on April 27. These include notification via email, voicemail and text. A banner will be posted on the University website, and messages will be shared via @WakeAlert Twitter and posted on the Wake Alert Facebook page.

Please update your mobile-phone information to receive emergency notifications from Wake Forest by text or phone.

The Emergency Alert System will send test messages to every TV that is connected to the campus cable network. This also includes the Stream2 app on any personal device, AppleTV, laptop, phone, etc., if you are logged in and watching at the time.

The outdoor emergency alert system will also be tested.

Testing will be carried out by the University Police Department and the Office of Communications and External Relations. No action is required in response to alert messages during these tests.

In addition to the testing procedures outlined above, emergency preparedness for members of the Wake Forest community requires each of us to review the University’s Emergency response, evacuation procedures and notification of immediate threat as posted on InsideWFU.

Please visit Wake Ready to review our emergency procedures.

Reminder: Indoor emergency alert systems to be tested May 6 through May 8

This announcement was emailed to faculty and staff on May 5; it was also be shared by Residence Life and Housing with students living on campus.  The emailed message did not contain the detailed list of buildings that is contained in this post for Inside WFU.

This is a reminder that indoor emergency alert systems on Reynolda Campus will be tested starting on May 6 and continuing through May 8.

Indoor emergency alert systems in many academic, administrative and athletics buildings will be tested. Testing will take place daily between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

No testing will take place in residence halls during those days.

Building occupants will hear a series of voice announcements from speakers declaring emergencies during the testing.  No action will be required by anyone who hears the announcements made during the tests.

Previously recorded messages will announce such situations as an active shooter, an armed intruder, a tornado and a general weather alert. Announcements directing people to shelter in place and to evacuate a building will be made, too.  An all clear message will be announced, as well.

The messages likely will be heard throughout the buildings; they will be audible for some people outside the buildings.

Indoor alert systems are part of Wake Forest’s comprehensive  Wake Alert emergency notification system.  Not all Wake Forest buildings have indoor alert systems, but they are present in many residence halls, dining areas, administrative buildings, academic buildings and athletics facilities.

The Wake Alert system also makes emergency announcements through the University’s web site (including the Wake Alert web page), e-mail, voice mail and text alerts (registered cell phones), social media and an outdoor alert system.  Those alert methods will not be tested May 6-8.

If an actual emergency were to occur on the testing dates, the University would use numerous alert methods to inform the campus.

Testing Schedule for May 6-8:

May 6 testing will take place at these locations:  Alumni Hall, Farrell Hall, North Chiller building, North Campus Dining, Worrell Professional Center, WFDD building, Wait Chapel/Wingate Hall, Benson University Center, Reynolda Hall, Reynolds Gym/Sutton Center, McCreary Field House and other athletics building in the complex, Salem Hall and Winston Hall.

May 7 testing will take place at these locations: Tribble Hall, Scales Fine Arts Center, Carswell Hall, Greene Hall, Byrum Welcome Center, Facilities Management, South Chiller building, Environmental Health and Services building, ROTC building, Starling Hall, Dailey Golf Learning Center, and the Haddock House.

May 8 testing will take place at these locations: clubhouse at Couch Baseball Park, ACC control room, and the Harold Pollard Center.

Wake Alert system to be tested Oct. 31

UPDATE: This test of the Wake Alert system has been delayed until Nov. 15 at 3:30 p.m.

This announcement was e-mailed to students, faculty and staff on Oct. 24 by Wake Forest Communications and External Relations:

Wake Forest will conduct a test of its Wake Alert emergency notification system at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 31.

On campus, people will hear a test message from outdoor speakers distributed at several campus locations, including outside BB&T Field.  Chimes will be heard from the outdoor alert system, initially, followed by a pre-recorded message announcing a test of the emergency alert system.

A test message will be sent by three other methods that are part of the Wake Alert system.  Students, faculty and staff will receive a message by e-mail. And, students, faculty and staff who have registered their cell phone for emergency messages will receive text and voice messages.  All messages will announce a test is being conducted. Anyone who has not registered their cell phone, already, may do so by visiting this web site.

No action will be required by anyone during the brief testing.

Wake Forest’s approach to communicating in emergencies is based on redundancy, using numerous methods to promptly communicate with faculty, staff and students, as well as parents, the public and news media.  Additional information is available on the Wake Ready website.
