10 tech tools for teaching

Come join us for a 30 minute “highlight reel” exploring faculty use cases for technologies used in teaching around campus. We will see how faculty are using tools like Sakai, Google, WebEx, VoiceThread, and other collaborative technologies in our classrooms. The class will be interactive. Please bring your laptop, smartphone or tablet.

Snow day resources available for optional remote classes

With potential snow days ahead, Information Systems has resources available to help faculty deliver content to students online, synchronously or asynchronously from home. All that is needed is a computer or mobile device and an internet connection. Faculty can deliver slides, videos, spreadsheets, images, or web pages and narrate using messaging, voice, or a webcam. Learners can participate by offering discussion and comments via messaging, voice, or webcam as well.

For more on how to run a dynamic, interactive, virtual class using VoiceThread, Show and Share, or WebEx, visit the faculty snow day resources page at go.wfu.edu/snowdaytech.

Introducing VoiceThread

@simplicityWake Forest now provides faculty, students and staff access to VoiceThread, a Web-based software that allows you to converse asynchronously around a document with voice or video. Commonly used for narrated PowerPoint presentations, VoiceThread is a highly flexible, collaborative environment for video, voice, images and common documents. VoiceThread presentations include narration using text, audio, or Webcam and the ability to allow others to view and comment.

WFU launches Voice Thread

Wake Forest has purchased a VoiceThread subscription plan for all students and faculty. These accounts are considered a part of the WFU VoiceThread community.

VoiceThread bridges the gap between real-time discussions and standard video lectures or online presentations. This makes VoiceThread the platform for teaching, learning, training, and collaborating, on-demand.

Simply put, VoiceThread is a way to have an online conversation in text, audio, or video around multimedia, such as a picture, a set of slides or a video. Although VoiceThread is very easy to use, instructors may want to sign up for a VoiceThread workshop through the PDC (Friday, Nov. 22, from 10-11:30 a.m.). The 90-minute session hosted by Online Education will discuss how to use the tools and focus on the use of VoiceThread in teaching and learning.

There is no software from VoiceThread to install, and it runs in your web browser. VoiceThread allows students to leave a voice or video comment directly on a presentation or document, and it includes the ability to draw on the document while speaking. While many types of software are available for providing an audio narration on a PowerPoint, VoiceThread was designed to provide a platform for conversation around a document, image, or set of slides. Should you use VoiceThread for your narrated lecture, encourage your students to use the comment feature to ask questions and offer their unique perspectives.

To access VoiceThread, visit voicethread.wfu.edu and sign in using your Wake ID.
