WFU wins NAFSA award for excellence in international education
Wake Forest University is among eight colleges and universities who will receive NAFSA’s 2015 Senator Paul Simon Awards for Campus Internationalization for excellence in international education.
Wake Forest and two other schools — Rice University and Virginia Commonwealth University, received the Senator Paul Simon Spotlight Award for specific international programs or initiatives that contribute to comprehensive internationalization.
Mount Holyoke College, North Central College, University of Delaware, University of San Diego, and the University of Virginia received the 2015 Simon Award for Comprehensive Internationalization.

Conference on intercultural learning, free to WFU community
The 
WISE Conference, Wake Forest’s premier conference focusing on intercultural learning will be held on Feb. 5-6 at the Marriott Hotel Winston-Salem in downtown Winston-Salem. The conference is free for Wake Forest faculty and staff; however, registration is required through Eventbrite.
Hosted by the Center for Global Programs and Studies, WISE helps faculty and staff leaders, program coordinators and student advisors develop the knowledge and skills they need to help study abroad students — including international students who “study abroad” in the U.S. or another country — develop intercultural skills and awareness.

Faculty, staff hit the bricks

Faculty and staff helped the Wake Forest community “Hit the Bricks” hard this year, joining with students to run 25,396 laps around Hearn Plaza and to raise close to $30,000 for cancer research and the Brian Piccolo Cancer Fund.

“Hit the Bricks” is part of a series of student-run events and activities to honor the former Chicago Bears running back, Brian Piccolo, who attended Wake Forest in the 1960s. The 1971 film, “Brian’s Song,” was based on the real-life relationship between teammates Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers and the bond established when Piccolo discovers he is dying of cancer at the age of 26.

Meet Steve Duke, International Studies
If Steve Duke isn’t in his Reynolda Hall office, you might look for him in Russia, Finland or one of the other 16 countries he’s visited. Duke, who has been director of the Center for International Studies for two-and-a-half years, works with faculty, students and staff on study abroad programs and oversees services for international students. He also teaches in the history department, primarily Russian and world history. Read more
