Steph Trilling, director of Wake Forest’s Women’s Center, and Erica Still, associate dean for faculty recruitment, diversity and inclusion, are the University’s representatives for the state chapter. Moreover, Wake Forest President Nathan O. Hatch is a Presidential Sponsor of NC ACE Women’s Network, which means, among other things, the University has made a commitment to the organization and its goals.

“We know that our institutions and communities are collectively more innovative, creative, visionary and successful when women’s voices are part of deliberations and decision-making at all levels, including the most senior,” Hatch said. “Therefore, I am proud to sign on as a Presidential Sponsor for the NC ACE Network of Women Leaders, whose work will help assure that a robust set of professional development, networking and leadership opportunities are widely available to members.”

Trilling and Still are excited about helping women better position themselves for leadership roles.

“We have a lot of women who work in higher education, but we’re still underrepresented in senior leadership roles, especially women of color or women who have other marginalized identities,” Trilling said. “Being a member of ACE will help women at Wake Forest gain the skills and the contacts they need to move into these roles and help us as a field achieve gender parity.”

WFU committee working to implement new Title IX regulations

Wake Forest University has established a Title IX 2020 Implementation Task Force led by Vice President for Campus Life Penny Rue and Associate Provost for Academic Initiatives Kami Chavis.

The group, which held its first meeting on June 3, was established following changes announced in early May by the U.S. Department of Education regarding how colleges and universities must handle sexual-assault and sexual-harassment complaints. The new regulations increase protections for accused students and employees and take effect Aug. 14.

Among the most notable changes, institutions must now hold live hearings and allow cross-examination when deciding sexual-misconduct complaints. The new federal regulations are the first regulatory revisions in 45 years to the federal gender-equity law and will also limit the scope of complaints colleges and universities are required to investigate.

Update on Title IX Office

The following announcement was e-mailed to faculty and staff from the Office of the Provost on Jan. 22 on behalf of Kami Chavis, associate provost for academic initiatives, associate vice president and professor of law:

Good morning, Wake Forest faculty and staff,

Late in 2019, Wake Forest announced that Tanya Jachimiak, Director of the Title IX Office/Title IX Coordinator and Section 504 Coordinator, had agreed to become Associate Vice President for Civil Rights and Title IX Education and Compliance at Michigan State University. Tanya has been a respected and cherished member of our campus community for over six years; her professionalism, integrity, and commitment to fairness are the hallmarks of her legacy.  She has played a central role in the university’s efforts to prevent and respond to sexual assault, and it is vital that we hire a knowledgeable and equity-minded leader to assume these responsibilities. The university has engaged Isaacson, Miller to assist with this important search.

Steph Trilling named director of Women's Center

Steph Trilling

Steph Trilling has been named the new director of Wake Forest’s Women’s Center, effective July 1.  The University’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) announced her appointment.

Trilling joined Wake Forest in fall 2017 as assistant director of the Safe Office.  In that position, she oversaw all functions of the Safe Office, while leading the campus community in efforts to ensure high quality crisis response, advocacy, and counseling services to students who had experienced sexual or relationship violence. She also developed campus-wide programing for students, staff, and faculty that focused on outreach and prevention strategies to reduce gender-based violence and abuse.

As the Women’s Center new director, she will bring a collaborative and intersectional approach to advocacy, inclusion, and equity in elevating programming, practice, and policy across ODI and the University, according to Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion José Villalba. She is particularly interested in applying principles of universal design and feminist theories to creating more equitable environments for everyone on campus, while grounding efforts in program analysis and evaluation.

Prior to arriving at Wake Forest, Trilling served in several capacities in the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center, including as director of community awareness and prevention. She is a licensed clinical social worker in North Carolina and received a Master of Social Work from Salem State University and a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
