Meiburg named to Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability

Stan Meiburg, director of Wake Forest’s program for Graduate Studies in Sustainability and former acting deputy administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has been named to the Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability as part of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM). Established in 2002, NASEM represents one element of the robust sustainability activities within the National Academies.

Members of the Roundtable include leaders from research institutions as well as senior decision makers from government and industry who deal with issues of sustainable development and who are in a position to mobilize new strategies and resources for sustainability. The Roundtable works to provide a high-level forum for sharing views, information, and analyses related to harnessing science and technology for sustainability, and then catalyzing follow-on advisory work through the Academies.

Meiburg appointed chairman of state's Environmental Management Commission

Stan Meiburg, director of Wake Forest’s graduate programs in sustainability, has assumed chairmanship of North Carolina’s Environmental Management Commission (EMC).  The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality announced Meiburg’s appointment this week.

Meiburg’s term will continue until June 30, 2021.

“Dr. Meiburg is a proven leader in air and water protection, and his expertise will serve the people of North Carolina well in the coming term,” said Assistant Secretary for the Environment Sheila Holman.

Meiburg recently served as chair of the EMC’s Air Quality Committee.

The commission is responsible for adopting rules for the protection, preservation and enhancement of the state’s air and water resources.

Meiburg joined Wake Forest in 2017 as director of the graduate programs in sustainability.  He earned his Bachelor of Arts in political science from Wake Forest in 1975.

In 39 years with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Meiburg served as acting deputy administrator, deputy regional administrator of Region 4 (Atlanta) and Region 6 (Dallas), acting regional administrator in Regions 4 and 6, national EPA liaison to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and Region 6 director of Air, Pesticides and Toxics Division. He also led work on the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments through EPA’s Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards.

The Environmental Management Commission was authorized by the N.C. General Assembly under General Statute 143B-283 and is a 15-member commission appointed by the Governor, the Senate Pro Tempore and the Speaker of the House. 2019 meetings are set for the second Thursdays of March, May, July, September and November.

Meiburg appointed to NC Environmental Management Commission

On July 7, Gov. Roy Cooper appointed Stan Meiburg, Director of the Sustainability Graduate Programs, to serve on the North Carolina Environmental Management Commission. Meiburg fills the seat requiring special training in hydrology, water pollution control, and the effects of water pollution.

“I am honored to have been appointed by Governor Cooper to the Environmental Management Commission and to serve with other North Carolinians who care deeply about our future. Working together, I believe we can sustain and improve this place that we all love,” Meiburg said in regard to his appointment which begins on Thursday, July 13.

The 15-member Commission is responsible for adopting rules for the protection, preservation,and enhancement of the state’s air and water resources. The Commission, according to the its website, oversees and adopts rules for several divisions of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, including the Divisions of Air Quality, Land Resources, Water Quality, and Water Resources.

University appoints director of graduate programs in sustainability

Wake Forest has appointed alumnus and former Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) official Stan Meiburg (’75) as director of graduate programs in sustainability.

Meiburg served as Acting Deputy Administrator for the EPA from 2014 to 2017, capping a 39-year career with the agency.

He is known for leading efforts to protect the nation’s air and water, clean up hazardous and toxic waste sites, build collaborative relationships with state and tribal environmental programs, and promote sound management in EPA.

At Wake Forest, he will lead the master of arts in sustainability program and associated dual degree and certificate programs.  He will work with the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the Center for Energy, Environment, and Sustainability (CEES). Meiburg will join Wake Forest on July 1.
