Wake Forest’s Office of the President is sponsoring a new Visiting Executive (VX) Program in partnership with the College, School of Business, and Office of Personal and Career Development. The purpose of the program is to connect industry leaders with students across the university. The first VX will be alumnus David Friedersdorf (’87), an entrepreneur in health care transformation. Friedersdorf will be collaborating with history professor Robert Hellyer and his Modern Japanese History class.
David N. Farr (’77, P’07), chairman and CEO at Emerson Electric, will visit the School of Business this fall, and Craig Donaldson (P’14, P’16), a founding partner of HG Capital, will collaborate with finance professor Bill Marcum.
“The VX Program offers opportunities to hear from accomplished leaders and experts whose wisdom gained through experiences of striving, perseverance, success and failure in the real world can help our students prepare for life after graduation,” said President Nathan O. Hatch.

Congratulations to Daniel B. Kim-Shapiro, professor physics, whose proposal entitled “Antidote for inhaled CO poisoning based on mutationally engineered neuroglobin” has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) under award number 1R01HL125886-01 and by [subaward/subcontract from] University of Pittsburgh (WFU funding agency).

On January 30-31, Wake Forest University hosted “The Civil Wars of Japan’s Meiji Restoration & National Reconciliation: Global Historical Perspectives” the initial conference in a multiyear, tri-continental (North America, Europe and Asia) project to facilitate international and interdisciplinary discussions in advance of the 150-year commemoration of Japan’s Meiji Restoration.
The 1868 Meiji Restoration was a crucial moment in Japanese and modern world history. The samurai-dominated feudal regime was overthrown, and the new regime, advocating adoption of Western models, quickly revamped political, economic, military, religious, and social structures, transforming 250 semi-autonomous feudal fiefs into a unified nation-state. Within a few decades, Japan rivaled Western nations in military and economic prowess.

Program participants included 18 faculty and staff from various departments across campus that serve in leadership roles.
The nine-month program kicked off last August with a two-day intensive session structured around a 360° assessment for each member. The developmental topics offered throughout the year included: Leading Authentically, Communicating Authentically, Powerful Conversations, Reinventing Diversity, Thriving in Times of Change, Leading with Your Strengths, and Leading Authentically: Putting it all Together.
