Gym renovation continues, wellness center memberships planned

Construction continues on the complete renovation of historic Reynolds Gym

When next fall semester arrives, people at Wake Forest will be enjoying a re-opened Reynolds Gym that has returned to the life of this community as a state-of-the-art wellbeing center.  On any given day, students, faculty, staff and others are likely to take advantage of its greatly expanded cardio and weight equipment, dedicated functional training space, personal and small group training, activity courts, climbing and bouldering wall, expanded operating hours, comfortable lounge and meeting space, and much more.  And, Reynolds Gym will offer even more when renovation of the entire facility is completed in spring 2018.

In support of the gym and the University’s extensive wellbeing center facilities, the University is introducing wellness center membership fees for some community members starting September 1.  The membership will be included in the total cost of attendance for all full-time Reynolda undergraduate and graduate students.  Details are available here.

Benefits-eligible faculty and staff will receive a free wellness center membership as an employee benefit, while all other University employees will have an opportunity to purchase a wellness center membership.  Arrangements have also been made for spouses and live-in partners of University students, faculty and staff who have a wellness membership to purchase their own membership.  There are opportunities for dependents ages 18 – 26, too.  Fees would be $30 monthly for eligible spouses, live-in partners and dependents.

The wellness center membership will offer access to wellbeing center facilities that include Reynolds Gym, Sutton Center and Campus Recreation playing fields and equipment.  A partial list of the membership benefits includes:

  • 18,500 square feet of cardio and weight equipment on four floors—more than triple the space and equipment currently in the Miller Center.
  • A new, dedicated functional training area.
  • Personal and small group training.
  • More fitness classes in nicer exercise studios and larger cycle studio.
  • More than double the amount of bouldering wall and a climbing wall.
  • Expanded swimming pool and vortex whirlpool.
  • Dedicated club sport practice and work-out studios.
  • Enlarged and enhanced locker rooms.
  • Comfortable lounges and meeting rooms.

For those wanting to hear more about the Wellbeing Center, an event is scheduled soon where a presentation will be made. Vice President for Campus Life Penny Rue and Joe Cassidy, executive director of Campus Fitness & Recreation, will speak on the Wellbeing Center at the Campus Connections event set for 8:45 to 10 a.m. Monday, March 27, at Benson University Center, Room 401.
