Wake Forest community invited to WISE Conference 2019

The Center for Global Programs and Studies encourages members of the Wake Forest community to attend WISE Conference 2019 on Feb. 14-15, at the Benton Convention Center in downtown Winston-Salem.
Wake Forest faculty, staff and students may attend at no cost when registering with their Wake Forest email address.

Registration is open through Monday, Feb. 4. Wake Forest personnel planning to attend for only one day* should utilize one of the following discount codes:

*If already registered, you are encouraged to email wiseconference@wfu.edu to adjust your registration to reflect the day you can attend. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us be mindful of fixed cost and food waste.
WISE is the pioneering conference for faculty leaders, program coordinators, and administrators to develop the knowledge and skills needed to help students advance their intercultural skills and awareness during abroad experiences. Founded as the Workshop on Intercultural Skills Enhancement, WISE has grown into a nationally-recognized conference. With approximately 275 attendees, the opportunities to have in-depth conversations and network with colleagues is the norm, rather than the exception.
The conference features a number of Wake Forest faculty, staff, and student presenters, including the following sessions:
- Supporting International Students: Understanding Cultural Barriers and Creating a Supportive Campus Network with Kawana Neufville, Porshè Chiles, and Joshua Ziesel.
- A World of Possibilities: Academic Library Partnerships for Intercultural Development with Joy Gambill and Hubert Womack.
- Speak Easy: Script-Based Communicative Strategies for Non-Language Programs with Rebecca Thomas.
- Impacts of the Study Abroad Gender Gap on Intercultural Competency: Data and Ideas to Help Engage Men in Intercultural Learning with Sean McGlynn.
- BRIDGE the Gap: A Rubric for Facilitating Meaningful Connections Between International and Domestic Students with Kara T. Rothberg.
- Collaborative Excellence in Global Education with Ashley Brookes and Marcia Crippen.
- The Relationship Between Domestic Student Friendships and International Students’ Social Outcomes at U.S. Universities with Nelson Brunsting and two Wake Forest undergraduate students, Yueying He and Yihan Zheng.

Conference on intercultural learning, free to WFU community
The 
WISE Conference, Wake Forest’s premier conference focusing on intercultural learning will be held on Feb. 5-6 at the Marriott Hotel Winston-Salem in downtown Winston-Salem. The conference is free for Wake Forest faculty and staff; however, registration is required through Eventbrite.
Hosted by the Center for Global Programs and Studies, WISE helps faculty and staff leaders, program coordinators and student advisors develop the knowledge and skills they need to help study abroad students — including international students who “study abroad” in the U.S. or another country — develop intercultural skills and awareness.

Rogan, Thomas named co-Interim Deans of the College

A message from Provost Rogan Kersh.
I am pleased to announce that the College’s current Senior Associate Deans, Rebecca Thomas and Randy Rogan, have agreed to serve as co-Interim Deans of the College. Randy and Rebecca’s seasoned leadership experience and close working relationship with departing Dean Jacque Fetrow make them ideal choices for this vital role. Given the College’s momentum along multiple fronts, from innovative academic programs and intensive student engagement to capital-campaign pursuits and heightened faculty-development efforts, this interim period will require steady hands on the tiller—which I know Rebecca and Randy, working with their terrific colleagues across the College Dean’s office, will manifestly provide.
We will also announce a search committee for the deanship in coming days, along with a series of forums (which both President Hatch and I plan to attend) for faculty and staff to discuss aspirations and issues related to the search for a new dean. For now, our collective gratitude to Randy and Rebecca, as they prepare jointly to take up the Interim Dean role.
And let me also express my sincere gratitude to you all for your support during this vital transition.

Band of Wake Foresters raises money for local nonprofit
“The Unbroken Circle,” a bluegrass band that incubated in the living rooms of Wake Forest faculty and staff, played a concert recently that raised $5,000 for the Shalom Project, a nonprofit that offers vital programs to its West Salem neighborhood.
The multigenerational band, whose members all have ties to Wake Forest, teamed up on Jan. 29 at the Green Street Church with professional blues musician Big Ron Hunter to perform a benefit entitled “Come Home.” Provost Emeritus Ed Wilson also read from the poetry of W. B. Yeats to an audience that exceeded 250.
“Wake Forest students, faculty and staff have a long history with both Green Street Church and the Shalom Project, be it serving the homeless through the Wake Saturdays program, tutoring children in the after school program, or serving meals at Wednesday night dinners,” said Martha Allman, dean of admissions and one of the Unbroken Circle’s founding members.
