Berenhaut receives award for mentoring undergraduates

Professor of Mathematics and Statistics Kenneth Berenhaut has been given the 2019 Advanced Career Mentoring Award from the Math and Computer Sciences Division of the Council on Undergraduate Research. The organization announced, recently, that Berenhaut and two others had been given the awards.
The organization informed Berenhaut that the “awards committee was very impressed” with his accomplishments in mentoring undergraduate research students. It’s official announcement states that Berenhaut works closely with students and has published more than 60 papers with undergraduate and/or master’s students. Twenty-two of the papers have been with undergraduate co-authors.
He is described as “vigilant regarding looking for opportunities wherein his students can have the opportunity to present their research.” His students have attended and presented at conferences around the world, including in Greece, Japan, Germany, Canada and Mexico. His research students have gone to doctoral programs nationwide.
In 2007, with Wake Forest support, he founded Involve: A Journal of Mathematics, with the goal to provide a venue to highlight the results of quality collaborations between faculty and students at all levels.
At Wake Forest, he has received several awards, including those recognizing his research and his dedication to mentoring. Awards include: 2006 Wake Forest University Excellence in Research Award, 2011 Russell D. Elfriede Hobbs Award for Entrepreneurship and the 2016 Wake Forest University Award for Excellence in Mentored Scholarship. In 2016, he was presented the Wake Forest University Graduate Faculty Award Excellence Award. He is to begin this year a three-year term as Baker Family Faculty Fellow.
