Drew Edwards, long-time psychology professor, passes away
We are sad to share that long-time psychology professor Drew Edwards passed away on July 20. Professor Edwards graduated from Wake Forest’s psychology M.A. program in 1968 and served as an adjunct for the psychology department for more than 40 years. He died from complications from Alzheimer’s and a brain injury.

“Drew was part of the fabric of the department,” said Wayne Pratt, professor and interim chair of the psychology department. “In addition to teaching at Wake Forest, Dr. Edwards had a long, long career doing clinical work, most recently focusing on attention, learning and disruptive behavior disorders in children. He touched the community broadly, and Wake Forest students specifically.”
We extend our condolences to professor Edwards’s family and friends, as well as all those at Wake Forest who had the opportunity to know him.

Graylyn employee Mr. Clyde Carter passes away
We are saddened to share that Mr. Clyde Carter, a maintenance technician at Graylyn, passed away on April 2. He was 52. Mr. Carter served Wake Forest University for more than 20 years. A link to his obituary may be found here.

Professor of Counseling Samuel Gladding passes away
A message from Communications and External Relations
We are saddened to announce that Professor of Counseling Samuel T. Gladding died Dec. 6 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem following an illness.
Professor Gladding was internationally recognized as a prolific author of books on counseling. During his extensive career, he traveled worldwide speaking, teaching and consulting. He led national and international counseling associations and was honored with an extensive list of awards for his writing, professional service and mentorship.

Professor of Russian Billy Hamilton passes away
We are saddened to announce that Professor of Russian Billy Hamilton died October 9 after living with leukemia.
Professor Hamilton, who was also a former assistant dean of the College, won the 2021 Jon Reinhardt Award for Distinguished Teaching at Wake Forest University, a fitting capstone to his 38-year career at Wake Forest.
In addition to teaching Slavic languages and linguistics, he also taught many aspiring old-time and bluegrass musicians of various abilities over the years. Professor Hamilton and his wife, Cindy, were members of the Unbroken Circle, a group of Wake Forest administrators, faculty and friends. The multigenerational music group annually raises funds for the Shalom Project at Green Street Church.
The Wake Forest community grieves Professor Hamilton’s death and extends our condolences to his family and friends, as well as those who had the opportunity to know him.
Because of Covid restrictions, rather than a formal funeral, the family is planning a musical celebration in the spring or summer of 2022. An obituary can be found here.

Robert Simpson, part-time dance instructor, passes away
We are saddened to announce that Robert Simpson, a part-time dance instructor at Wake Forest, passed away on April 14 after a battle with cancer.
During his teaching career, Robert was a beloved member of the Theatre and Dance department. He joined Wake Forest in 1997 and taught social dance classes for 24 years.
