Temperature in campus buildings to be lowered to save energy during winter break

The following is a guest post from Facilities and Campus Services:

To: Reynolda Campus Faculty and Staff:

In an effort to conserve energy over the winter holiday period, the Facilities & Campus Services Department will be implementing the annual temperature setback program for our academic and administrative buildings starting the night of Friday, December 21, and ending the morning of Tuesday, January 2.

The setback program will maintain building temperatures at no less than 55 degrees (F) during the holiday period.  Beginning at 2 a.m. on January 2, the heating systems will gradually return the buildings to comfortable conditions. We intend for all buildings to be at 70 degrees (F) by the time employees arrive at work. Facilities technicians will arrive early on that date to ensure building heating systems have reactivated as scheduled. A similar program is being conducted in the unoccupied areas of our residence halls.

This program generates significant cost savings through reduced energy consumption, and over the last nine years has avoided over $360,000 in energy costs.

Staff or faculty who intend to visit or work on campus during the holiday period are advised to wear appropriate clothing and consider bringing a light jacket or sweater to work.

For departments that would like an exemption or have received exemptions in the past, please contact Doug Ecklund at ecklundr@wfu.edu and state your exemption needs as soon as possible.

Thank you for supporting this effort to save energy during the holiday period.

A message from Provost Kersh and Executive Vice President Milam

This message was emailed to staff and faculty on April 26 by Wake Forest Communications and External Relations on behalf of Provost Rogan Kersh and Executive Vice President Hof Milam:

Dear Colleagues,

In keeping with a broader Wake Forest security initiative, the Physical Security Technology and Deacon OneCard (PST/DOC) office, a division of Residence Life and Housing, has been charged with oversight responsibility for the selection, purchase, installation, maintenance and operation of card readers, cameras, and alarm devices.

Offices with upcoming physical security technology projects or needs should contact James Byrd in the PST/DOC office.  James will also be contacting appropriate offices directly to discuss steps that would better integrate those offices’ existing physical security technology with more extensive technology systems on campus.

PST/DOC will be advised by a team that includes Steve Adams – Athletics, Mike Draughn – Facilities, Rob Smith and Rick Tomlinson – Information Services, August Vernon – University Police, Donna McGalliard – Residence Life and Housing, Wendy Logan – Campus Life, Dina Marty – Legal, Ken Overholt – Properties, and Kami Chavis – Academics.  James Byrd will serve as team leader.

We are confident that this central oversight approach will improve the functionality and compatibility of the Reynolda campus physical security technology and best safeguard the people, assets, and information at Wake Forest.  Your cooperation and assistance are greatly appreciated.

Campus energy conservation plan to be in effect during break

This is a guest post from Facilities & Campus Services:

In an effort to conserve energy over the winter holiday period, Facilities & Campus Services will carry out the annual temperature setback program for academic and administrative buildings from the evening of Dec. 23 until Jan. 4.

The setback program will maintain building temperatures at no less than 55 degrees (F) during the holiday period. Beginning at 2 a.m. on Jan. 4, heating systems will gradually return the buildings to more comfortable conditions. A similar program is being conducted in the unoccupied areas of our residence halls. These programs will generate significant cost savings through reduced energy consumption, and have avoided more than $240,000 in energy costs over the last six years.

Staff or faculty who intend to visit or work on campus during the holiday period are advised to wear appropriate clothing and consider bringing a light jacket or sweater to work.

Staff, students continue water conservation success

Silman

Biology professor Miles Silman makes his conservation pledge.

Out of a field of 125 colleges and universities, Wake Forest students placed in the top five in fresh water savings for the second year in a row during the 2015 Campus Conservation Nationals competition.

Campus Conservation Nationals is a nationwide, three-week effort among institutions of higher learning to conserve electricity and water.

From Feb. 9 to March 1, Wake Forest students competed to achieve the greatest reductions in their residence halls in electricity and water consumption. Due to extremely cold weather conditions, Wake Forest was unable to place in the top 10 in electricity reduction like last year. However, the cold weather did not stop their efforts with water usage. Students saved over 37,000 gallons of water during the competition window.
