Salem Band performs their 2014 Winter Concert
The Salem Band, led by Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music Eileen Young, performed their 2014 Winter Concert in Brendle Recital Hall on Feb. 4. The band played a variety of pieces including Shostakovich’s “Festive Overture,” the “Morning Star Polka,” Benny Goodman’s “Let’s Dance” and Les Brown’s “Leap Frog” among other favorites. “This concert gives the band a chance to play in a formal hall,” said Young.
The band is made up of 60 musicians varying in age and levels of experience, from Kate Chanas who has only played with Salem for four months to Bob Ward who has been performing for 50 years. “This is another family,” Ward said. “It just speaks a different language.”
The Salem Band, established in 1771, is the oldest, continuous mixed wind ensemble in the nation. During the summertime, concerts are normally held outside in Salem Square.
