Meet Wake Forest’s bike-riding parking enforcement officer

This is a guest post from the Office of Sustainability:

Wake Forest’s new parking enforcement officer, Kathy Kullman, is much like others in the Parking and Transportation Office.  She strives to be friendly and approachable throughout the day to those she meets on the job. But, there is something different about her.

What sets her apart is not hard to notice.  Her favorite means of getting around campus is human-powered. Kullman is often on a bicycle when she is on the job.

Kullman has committed to biking throughout a significant portion of her workday. After previously working as a bicycle patrol officer for a school in California, it was a “no-brainer” when Alex Crist, director of Parking and Transportation, asked about her preference on biking.

“Having a parking enforcement officer on a bike is great for our campus,” says Crist. “We are saving money on fuel, reducing our carbon footprint, and providing an invaluable resource of increased accessibility to our campus community.”

Parking enforcement officers can, unfortunately, generate negative perceptions at times. Enabling officers to patrol on a bike can help break down these barriers and increase engagement with community members. Kullman, who has been on her bike for approximately one month, recalls countless positive interactions with students, faculty and staff while biking. One such interaction involved a faculty member applauding her for her efforts.

Parking Office striving to reduce impact of parking lot loss

Guest post from Alex Crist, director of the Parking and Transportation Office:

This summer, a top priority of the Parking and Transportation staff has been finding ways to reduce the impact on faculty and staff of the loss of a parking lot to new construction. Several solutions have been found and will be in place by the time classes begin for the fall semester.

This effort, made in coordination with Facilities and Campus Services, came in response to the loss of Parking Lot H, a popular parking area with faculty and staff, and the temporary loss of some adjacent Lot J spaces due to the project.  A residence hall, which will be a new home for first-year undergraduates, is being built on the site of Lot H at the intersection of Wingate Road and Jasper Memory Lane.  Lot J—used mostly by students and a small number of faculty and staff—is located behind South and Collins residence halls on Jasper Memory Lane.

Parking Lot H closed June 25-26

Parking Lot H is closed June 25 and 26.  The lot is located along Wingate Road near lots F and J in the southern section of campus. The Parking and Transportation Office recommends using those two lots while H is closed.

The University’s parking map offers information about parking lot locations.

Whenever parking lots are closed, the Parking and Transportation Office recommends alternative modes of transportation such as carpooling, bicycles or mass transit to reduce the demand for parking during these times.

Parking for commencement

A message from Wake Forest’s Office of Parking and Transportation

To prepare for Commencement on May 18, coupled with the renovation of Kitchin Residence Hall during the summer, parking lot N will be closed May 9 – Aug. 8. This closing is occurring at a time that should cause the least disruption to faculty and staff parking choices.

Faculty/Staff Parking Options:

During this time, parking availability can be found in Lots B, P and W1. Here is a link to the parking map for reference.

When parking lots are closed, alternative modes of transportation such as carpooling, bicycles or bus transit are recommended to reduce the demand for parking. If you have any questions, please contact Alex Crist at 336-758-2558.
