Three capital projects begin soon to address significant issues

While new capital projects, largely, have been suspended on the Reynolda Campus, three projects will proceed this summer.  All three are considered necessary to address critical infrastructure and other issues.

They include:

  • Bostwick and Johnson residence halls, neighboring buildings on Gulley Drive that were among the first original buildings to open on the Reynolda Campus. They are closed, at present. Each will receive new heating and cooling equipment that will improve indoor air quality and increase control of indoor environments. Work begins the week of May 4 and will continue through the summer.
  • Greene Hall, Manchester Plaza. The project will focus on some failing structural conditions and water infiltration issues. Some of the project will include replacing certain windows and water proofing, in addition to exterior wall panel work.  Two sides of the building will be worked on—east (facing athletics facilities) and west (facing Manchester Plaza). Access to the building will remain available. The project begins May 11 and will continue through the summer.
  • An extension will be made to the chilled water line that runs underground along Carroll Weathers Drive past Worrell Professional Center. It will be extended underground from the Wake Forest Road/Carroll Weathers Drive intersection to Wellman Way. Temporary road closures are likely, at times, during the project. Work will begin in May (exact date undetermined) and continue through the summer.

HealthWhat is HELPS TLC? HELPS TLC is a medically directed, professionally supervised program designed to help WFU employees develop a healthy and active lifestyle using exercise and education.

What is the cost? The cost will be covered by Wake Forest.

Political event to be held on campus March 13

This message was emailed by Communications and External Relations to students, faculty and staff on the evening of March 12:

Former President Bill Clinton is planning to visit the Reynolda Campus tomorrow (March 13) to campaign for his wife, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

President Clinton is expected to attend a Get Out the Vote event at 3:45 p.m. on Sunday in the Wake Forest University School of Law Professional Center Library. The event is open to the public; however, space is limited and access is not guaranteed. Doors will open at 3:00 p.m.

The event is organized by the Hillary Clinton campaign.

Traffic on and around the Reynolda Campus is expected to be heavy Sunday afternoon. Due to the number of visitors anticipated, the University encourages students, faculty and staff not planning to attend the event to avoid the area around Worrell Professional Center throughout the afternoon.

Temporary road closing planned for July 2

A portion of Carroll Weathers Drive will be closed from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. July 2, requiring a slight detour for campus drivers. Carroll Weathers Drive runs past the side of Worrell Professional Center, as well as Alumni Hall before crossing Wake Forest Road and continuing past Farrell Hall.

Closed will be the section that runs directly alongside Worrell Professional Center where construction is underway.

Lot W1 and other area parking lots will remain open and accessible.

Construction company workers will be available to direct drivers.

Tree removed, another removal planned

sfac-poplar

On June 15, a Poplar tree was removed near Scales Fine Arts Center when new pipe was installed under Wake Forest Road.  Installation of the pipe required removing exposed tree roots, weakening the tree. The tree was also on the bank of a creek, so the root system on the creek side was exposed and undermined by erosion. Both factors made the tree a high risk for blow over.

Damaged-tree-WorrellIn late May, a Red Maple tree was damaged by a contractor delivering a dumpster to the construction site at Worrell Professional Center, adjacent to Lot W. These wounds, at a minimum, will cause a column of decay and weaken the tree. The tree will be removed in the near future. A suitable replacement will be chosen and planted during the landscaping phase of the project.
