"Re-thinking Marginalized Identities in Pandemics" colloquium Oct. 9

Organized and moderated by Sant’Anna academic director Marco Marino and Wake Forest associate professor of Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies Wanda Balzano, the colloquium will examine the ways the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted equity and equality. Top scholars from around the world will consider the disproportionate and devastating outcomes of the pandemic and how they relate to gender, sexuality, race and class. Through these conversations, Wake Forest, the Sant’Anna Institute and panelists will contribute to the current and urgent conversation about equality from a multicultural perspective.

Kóczé speaks at Budapest conference on minority rights

Angéla Kóczé

Angéla Kóczé, visiting assistant professor in the Department of Women’s Gender, and Sexuality Studies, was one of the speakers, recently, at a conference focused on minority rights in the United States and in Europe.

The Central European University web site reported that Kóczé and other experts gathered in Budapest Dec. 7-8 for CEU’s conference called “Inside the Struggle: The U.S. Civil Rights Movement & the European Roma Rights Crisis.”

The conference juxtaposed the situation of Roma communities in Europe that face discrimination, violence and poverty with the U.S. civil rights movement’s successes and continued challenges.

WGS service-learning class helps secure grant for El Buen Pastor

Thanks in part to professor Angéla Kóczé’s service learning course, “Women Entrepreneurship: Innovation, Sustainability, and Social Responsibility,” El Buen Pastor Latino Community Services was recently awarded a grant for $24,500 from The Women’s Fund of Winston-Salem.

As part of the course, Kóczé’s students generate social change through entrepreneurship. Under her leadership, she and her students developed a grant proposal to help women in the El Buen Pastor community start their own businesses. The funds awarded by The Women’s Fund of Winston-Salem will provide support for training, workshops, networking, seed funding and hands-on experiences to an initial group of 10 women entrepreneurs.

Journeys to Success Speaker Series to feature Dolores Huerta

Labor leader and civil rights activist Dolores Huerta will be the featured speaker Oct. 29 in Carswell Hall for the Journeys to Success Speaker Series hosted by the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

The event is free and open to the public.  It will be held at 6 p.m. in the Annenberg Forum.

Every semester, the Office of Multicultural Affairs hosts the Journeys to Success Speaker Series signature event. The Office seeks established international, national and local professionals of color to share their experiences traversing their respective fields. It brings speakers who will inspire students through sharing the story of their success and challenges.

ACE Fellows announced for 2015-16

Twelve Wake Forest faculty members have been named to the University’s 2015-2016 class of Academic Community Engagement (ACE) Fellows.

In its 17th year, the ACE Fellowship program provides support for selected faculty members interested in integrating some form of community engagement into classes. Each year, up to 12 fellows are selected by the faculty director of the ACE Fellows Program, the ACE Advisory Council, the director of the Teaching and Learning Center and the Dean of the College.
