Wake Forest community invited to WISE Conference 2019

The Center for Global Programs and Studies encourages members of the Wake Forest community to attend WISE Conference 2019 on Feb. 14-15, at the Benton Convention Center in downtown Winston-Salem.
Wake Forest faculty, staff and students may attend at no cost when registering with their Wake Forest email address.

Registration is open through Monday, Feb. 4. Wake Forest personnel planning to attend for only one day* should utilize one of the following discount codes:

WISE is the pioneering conference for faculty leaders, program coordinators, and administrators to develop the knowledge and skills needed to help students advance their intercultural skills and awareness during abroad experiences. Founded as the Workshop on Intercultural Skills Enhancement, WISE has grown into a nationally-recognized conference. With approximately 275 attendees, the opportunities to have in-depth conversations and network with colleagues is the norm, rather than the exception.
The conference features a number of Wake Forest faculty, staff, and student presenters, including the following sessions:
- Supporting International Students: Understanding Cultural Barriers and Creating a Supportive Campus Network with Kawana Neufville, Porshè Chiles, and Joshua Ziesel.
- A World of Possibilities: Academic Library Partnerships for Intercultural Development with Joy Gambill and Hubert Womack.
- Speak Easy: Script-Based Communicative Strategies for Non-Language Programs with Rebecca Thomas.
- Impacts of the Study Abroad Gender Gap on Intercultural Competency: Data and Ideas to Help Engage Men in Intercultural Learning with Sean McGlynn.
- BRIDGE the Gap: A Rubric for Facilitating Meaningful Connections Between International and Domestic Students with Kara T. Rothberg.
- Collaborative Excellence in Global Education with Ashley Brookes and Marcia Crippen.
- The Relationship Between Domestic Student Friendships and International Students’ Social Outcomes at U.S. Universities with Nelson Brunsting and two Wake Forest undergraduate students, Yueying He and Yihan Zheng.

Annual Wake Forest Artisans' Fair to be held Dec. 2

It’s time for the annual Wake Forest University Artisans’ Fair to be held on Friday, Dec. 2 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. in Benson University Center, Room 401. Thirty vendors will show and sell their handcrafted products which include jewelry, woodworking, stitchery, pottery, baked goods, stained glass, etc.

An exciting new feature to the annual event are items made by Facilities and Campus Services from recycled Wake Forest products! Palmer/Piccolo bed frames have been converted into Adirondack-style chairs, flooring from Reynolds Gym has been transformed into a table, and wooden trivets are designed from the beloved magnolia trees. Products will be on display as silent auction items (some with minimum pricing), with bids taken until 4 p.m. At the close of the event, those with the highest bids will be notified of their winning bids and arrangements made for item pickup. Proceeds from these items will benefit the United Way.

Herndon-Edmunds, Williams appointed to new roles at University
Shayla Herndon-Edmunds
In the University’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Shayla Herndon-Edmunds has been appointed director of diversity education and J. Matthew Williams has been appointed director of communication.
Barbee Oakes, chief diversity officer and assistant provost for diversity and inclusion, described the appointments as supporting Wake Forest’s ongoing commitment to improve the campus climate and build an inclusive community.
Herndon-Edmunds joined Wake Forest’s staff in 2006. Most recently, she was manager of diversity of education.
In her expanded role, Herndon-Edmunds will develop strategies to strengthen the cultural competence and intercultural skills of faculty, staff and students, giving special attention to the first-year experience for college students and new faculty development.
She will also oversee a cadre of volunteers trained to deliver the Gatekeepers Workshop Initiative, Wake Forest’s signature diversity education program. Since its inception, more than 1,900 faculty, staff and students have participated in the four-part series.
Additionally, her role includes strategic partnership with University Police, Academic Advising, Residence Life and Housing, the Pro Humanitate Institute, graduate and professional schools and other areas of the University.
Herndon-Edmunds received a Bachelor of Arts in English and Business Administration from George Mason University. A licensed professional life coach, she is certified in emotional intelligence, unconscious bias and intercultural development.
Matt Williams
Williams joined Wake Forest’s staff in 2011. Most recently, he was associate director of marketing and communication in the University’s Office of Personal and Career Development.
In his new role, Williams will oversee communication for the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, as well as provide consultative support to the Intercultural Center, Women’s Center, LGBTQ Center and Diversity Education. His position also includes strategic partnership with University Advancement (and its Communications and External Relations staff) and the Office of the President, where he will work with their leadership teams to elevate the University’s commitment to and promotion of diversity and inclusion to all University constituents.
Williams received a Bachelor of Arts in Communication at Wake Forest and is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in communication at the University. His research centers on the intersections of digital media, identity and social justice.
