Kendi delivers keynote address at King event; WFU and WSSU staff and students honored

Ibram X. Kendi

Ibram X. Kendi, professor of history and international relations, and founding director of the Antiracist Research and Policy Center at American University, delivered the Martin Luther King Jr. keynote address in Wait Chapel on Jan. 20.

For 20 years, Wake Forest and Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) have collaborated on bringing in a keynote speaker to honor the life and legacy of King, making it the longest-running partnership between the two institutions.

Before Kendi’s speech, a ceremony for this year’s “Building the Dream” winners was held in the Donald J. Reaves Student Center on the campus of Winston-Salem State University. The award is traditionally presented to a professor or administrator and a student from both Wake Forest and WSSU who exemplify King’s qualities and promote diversity within the community.

Wake Forest employees Shannon Ashford and Darlene Starnes, and WSSU employee Heather Davis were honored, as were Wake students Neicy Myers and Liz Torres-Ramirez and WSSU student Naviyea Adams.

Unique Deac: Inclusion takes everyone to make it happen

Wake Forest students identify what makes them unique at the Unique Deac event sponsored by Athletics and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion on Manchester Plaza last fall.

The following is a guest post from the Office of Diversity and Inclusion

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion – Diversity Education has launched #UniqueDeac at Wake Forest in celebration of its 10-year anniversary. The initiative is designed to provide the campus community with educational programming and events that help students, faculty and staff to see, understand and value the unique differences of our community.

“It’s not just a slogan or one program, it’s a platform that every Deacon can embrace to share their unique story and celebrate others’,” said Shannon Ashford, associate director of diversity education. “It’s about affirming the strength in our differences.”

In October, Diversity Education and Wake Forest Athletics hosted “#UniqueDeac Day” on the Mag Quad, inviting passersby to share an identity about themselves that influences their life perspective and how they contribute to the world. More than 200 Wake Foresters participated in the photo project.

Photos and stories collected from #UniqueDeac Day will be on display in the Benson Center Rotunda during the week of Martin Luther King Day, from Jan. 21-24.

This was the first collaborative event with a campus partner under the #UniqueDeac platform. Other Diversity Education sponsored #UniqueDeac programs include tailored workshops and a seven-week immersive intercultural competence development program.

“The goal of this platform is to empower every member of our community to champion diversity and inclusion, and we invite other departments and campus organizations to join us in championing the message of #UniqueDeac,” said Ashford.

Contact Shannon Ashford at ashforsk@wfu.edu for more details and to partner with the initiative.

Office of Diversity and Inclusion announces promotions for Ashford, McElderry

The Wake Forest Office of Diversity and Inclusion announced, recently, promotions for staff members Shannon Ashford and Jonathan McElderry.

Shannon Ashford

Ashford was promoted to associate director of diversity education.  McElderry was promoted to executive director of the Intercultural Center.

Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion José Villalba said Ashford “has provided impactful and insightful guidance, vision, and implementation of student-centered diversity education so as to make Wake a more empathetic and belonging community.”  In her new role, “Shannon will continue to engage with students and student leaders, as well as connect and collaborate with faculty and staff as they focus on elevating their inclusive practices and programming,” Villalba added.

She previously served as program manager for diversity education.

McElderry joined Wake Forest in 2016 as director of the Intercultural Center and assistant dean of students.

Jonathan McElderry

“In his time at Wake Forest, Jonathan has overseen an expansion in the programming offered by the center, as well as influencing the breadth of inclusive practices and initiatives across campus life,” said Villalba.  “He is a standout scholar-practitioner, who has authored or co-authored research articles, book chapters, and mainstream resources so as to increase access to promising student affairs practices on college campuses.”

McElderry also mentors new and prospective leaders in student affairs, in addition to serving as an affiliate faculty member in the University’s Department of Counseling.
